The charming medieval town of Speyer was once an important Roman settlement, guarded against floods by high river banks. The tombs of German Emperors can be found in its grand cathedral, and one of only four Golden Hats from the Bronze Age cult of the sun is on show in the museum. Excursions to Heidelberg may be offered from Speyer.
