A Day On Board Viking Sun

Mon 1 Oct 2018

Cruising Specialist Karen was lucky enough to be invited on board Viking Cruises' superb ocean ship Viking Sun when she docked in Liverpool. Read her exclusive review:

This was my first experience of a Viking Ocean ship; ocean cruising is relatively new to Viking Cruises and whilst I expected the same high standard as their river vessels I was extremely impressed the moment I stepped aboard Viking Sun.

Understated luxury is how I would describe the feel onboard; the décor is very modern with clean lines yet provides a warm, welcoming ambience. It was a pleasure to meander around the decks enjoying the various pieces of art work on display; it is even possible to download an app and use your headphones to enjoy a tour which provides more of an insight into these works.

Dining is most certainly a focal point of any Viking Ocean cruise and I was fortunate enough to enjoy a delicious buffet lunch in the World Café which offers indoor and al fresco seating on the Aquavit Terrace around the outdoor infinity pool.

The impressive Atrium Relax in the Explorers' Lounge Delicious food on board Relax in the infinity pool and hot tub Enjoy amazing views from the sun deck Manfredi's Italian Restaurant Socialise with fellow guests in the nightclub The Chef's Table Gain new culinary skills at The Kitchen Table Enjoy regional cuisine in The Restaurant Relax in the on board spa Viking Sun The main pool turns into a cinema in the evenings

Other dining venues include “The Restaurant” which is the main venue and divided into sections to give a more intimate feel with panoramic views, a light, airy feel and various table sizes. There is a wide choice of culinary offerings and a daily changing menu.

“The Chef’s Table” offering a tasting menu and “Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant” can be pre-booked as alternative venues and neither incur a charge. Each seat around 120 and there are also private dining areas, perhaps for those celebrating a special occasion. For those wishing to display their culinary skills “The Kitchen Table” offers the perfect opportunity and guests can enjoy an interactive experience learning new dishes.

Two of my favourite areas onboard are the “Winter Garden” surrounding the Main Pool area with hot tub, complete with retractable roof for more inclement days; this is a superb area to relax and unwind with plenty of space for everyone. During the evenings, a cinema screen is opened up and guests are provided with blankets to cosy up and enjoy a good film!

The other has to be “The Spa” including a very unique snow grotto (supposedly all in the name of health and rejuvenation!) but what a perfect way to pamper yourself whilst at sea. Use of all facilities are included within your holiday price.

Under 18’s are not permitted onboard and I can certainly see why. A Viking Ocean cruise is the ideal way to relax and indulge yourself at sea and I would not hesitate in recommending this to anyone!

In 2019 Viking Sun will circumnavigate the globe on its world cruise from Miami to London. Shorter itineraries include exploring the jewels of the Caribbean and the South American coast, and discovering the islands of the South Pacific including legendary Easter Island and idyllic Tahiti. Trace the southern coast of two continents on the Southern Australia to South Africa cruise or sail along Africa’s west coast to visit French colonial treasures and see amazing wildlife. Discover hidden gems closer to home on the British Isles Explorer cruise, delve into the Viking heritage of Scandinavia, sail across the Arctic Circle under the Midnight Sun or cross the Atlantic on a relaxing cruise from London to New York City.
