Discover medieval Germany on this superb holiday along the Main and Danube rivers.

Join your ship in Mainz, the capital of the Rhineland and home to two rare Gutenberg Bibles, the first books ever printed. Continue past stunning riverside scenery to the beautiful medieval town of Miltenberg with its labyrinth of alleys and lanes. The market place is home to the magnificent Gasthaus Zum Riesen, reportedly Germany's oldest tavern.

Cruise under Miltenberg's red brick bridge and on to Wetheim, overlooked by a magnificent 12th-century castle and the Bavarian city of Wurzburg, home to the stunning Baroque Residenz.

See the sights of Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on a guided tour including the multi-spired cathedral and Old Town Hall. History lovers will enjoy exploring Nuremberg, the site of many pre-war nazi rallies and the International War Crimes Tribunal.

Medieval Germany Itinerary

Day 1 - UK - Frankfurt (Germany) - Mainz

Fly to Frankfurt and transfer to your ship docked in Mainz. Meet your fellow cruisers and enjoy a delicious dinner on board.

Day 2 - Mainz

This morning, explore Mainz which was an important Roman city for 500 years, on a guided tour. Highlights include the 12th-century Dom St Martin, a spectacular Romanesque cathedral , the beautiful stained glass windows of St Stephen's church and the Gutenberg Museum which houses two rare Gutenberg Bibles. Perhaps visit the traditional taverns of the Old Town where you can sample the local beers.

Day 3 - Miltenberg - Wertheim

Miltenberg is one of Germany's best preserved medieval villages set against a backdrop of emerald forest. Accompanied by a local guide, see the magnificent gatehouse and stroll around the beautiful market place, home to Germany's oldest tavern and an ornate fountain. This afternoon, cruise under Miltenberg's red brick bridge and continue to Wertheim. A 12th-century castle overlooks the Old Town with its colourful buildings and impressive turrets. Overnight cruising to Wurzburg.

Day 4 - Wurzburg

The Bavarian city of Wurzburg was founded in the 10th century as the heart of the Franconian kingdom. Arrive in Wurzburg this afternoon for a guided tour of the city's highlights, including a visit to the magnificent Baroque Residenz palace with its enchanting ornamental gardens.

Day 5 - Rothenburg

Drive along the Romantic Road to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, situated on top of a hill with breathtaking views over the river below, whose beautiful Old Town nestles within well-preserved walls. A short drive takes us to Ochsenfurt, nestled on the banks of the Main. This afternoon, explore this picturesque little town with its romantic, half-timbered houses and ancient ramparts on a guided tour.

Day 6 - Bamberg

Afternoon arrival in to Bamberg for a guided tour of the enchanting Old Town. See the impressive cathedral, the Old Town Hall which sits on an island in the middle of the river, and the Little Venice area which dates from the Middle Ages. Sail along the Main-Danube canal towards Nuremberg.

Day 7 - Nuremberg

Explore Nuremberg, a city associated with World War II. See the fine historic buildings from Nuremberg's Imperial Age including the Kaiserburg Castle, Craftsmen's Court, the Church of St Lawrence and the picturesque Market Square, and perhaps sample some of Nuremberg's famous gingerbread.

Day 8 - Munich - UK

Disembark and transfer to Munich airport for your return flight to the UK.
