This short break holiday starts in the ancient city of Bordeaux, the world's major wine industry capital. Bordeaux has been associated with the English for many years through the wine trade, and its excellent red Bordeaux wine (claret). For 300 years from 1152 this part of the French region of Aquitaine was defended by English kings, leaving ancient castles and fortified towns across the landscape.
Our ship travels down river from Bordeaux to Pauillac and Blaye, both noted wine towns, with optional tours of wine growing areas and fortified towns along the river. Continue upriver past Bordeaux to Cadillac on the Garonne, from where there is an optional visit to St Emilion. The village is noted for its tunnels and catacombs as well as for its wine.
Bordeaux has direct flights from the UK and is three hours from Paris by TGV. This 4-night break could be combined with a stay in the Bordeaux area or further south along the Aquitaine coast.
