Spanish Islands of the Atlantic

Southampton, England - Southampton, England

Lying near the head of Southampton Water, a peninsula between the estuaries of the Rivers Test and Itchen, Southampton is Britain’s largest cruise port. It has been one of England’s major ports since the Middle Ages, when it exported wool and hides from the hinterland and imported wine from Bordeaux. The city suffered heavy damage during World War Two and as a result the centre has been extensively rebuilt, but there are still some interesting medieval buildings including the Bargate, one of the finest city gatehouses in England.

Lisbon, Portugal - Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is the fascinating capital of Portugal and renowned for its ornate architecture and traditional wooden trams. There is an interesting mix of modern and ancient with shopping districts alongside the characteristic Old Town. See the famous Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery on a panoramic drive, enjoy a ride on one of the city's vintage trams followed by a Port wine tasting, or explore the three Portuguese towns of Obidos, Nazare and Alcobaca which are steeped in history.

Funchal, Madeira - Funchal, Madeira

Home to vine-covered mountains, famous botanical gardens and a profusion of wild flowers, Madeira's natural beauty has given the island the name The Floating Garden of the Atlantic. Perhaps take the cable car to the charming hilltop town of Monte, explore the Botanical Gardens, visit a wine lodge for a tasting of the island's famous wines or walk along the levada irrigation channels for great views. An overnight stop gives ample opportunity for stargazing from the ship's decks.

Santa Cruz, Tenerife - Santa Cruz, Tenerife

Nestled between the sea and the Cantabrian Mountains, Santander is one of the prettiest cities in Spain. From here perhaps visit Bilbao and the Guggenheim Museum, enjoy a coastal drive to pretty local villages or join the coach tour around Santander.

Santa Cruz, La Palma - Santa Cruz, La Palma

Beautiful Santa Cruz nestles on the edge of the La Caldereta volcanic crater and contrasts modern architecture with old colonial buildings. Why not visit the unique Silk Museum at the old town of El Paso, admire the vast Taburiente Crater or observe the night sky on a trip to the Pilar viewpoint.

San Sebastian, La Gomera - San Sebastian, La Gomera

La Gomera is known as the Round Isle and is often overshadowed by its neighbour, Tenerife. La Gomera's national park is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and its capital, San Sabastian, was visited by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Perhaps explore Garajonay National Park and the quaint village of Agulo on an optional excursion or take the optional hike up El Alto de Garajonay, the highest point on the island.

Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura - Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura

Furteventura is the second-largest island in the Canary archipelago and has a stunning coastline. The island has several traditional windmills, evidence of traditional agriculture, and its capital, Puerto del Rosario boasts characteristic Canarian-style houses and a beautiful promenade. Optional excursions include a visit to La Gayria, a traditional farmhouse and vineyard, and a guided tour showcasing the island's main attractions including the Aloe Vera Factory and the Casa Santa Maria Museum.

La Coruña, Spain - La Coruña, Spain

La Coruna has a rich maritime heritage and was the departure point for the defeated Armada. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Tower of Hercules is Europe’s oldest working lighthouse and dates back to Roman times. Today the town is known as 'The Crystal City' due to its many windowed balconies that face the waterfront promenade and sparkle when they catch the sun. Perhaps visit the pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela or explore the beautiful gardens of Pazo de Oca, a 17th-century manor.
