Uncover the beauty and natural wonders of the remote Orkney and Faroe Islands on this exciting short break cruise.

Balmoral will present you with spectacular views of The Needle and the Old Man of Hoy, two magnificent sea stacks guarding the rugged Orkney Islands; and take you to Lerwick, in the picturesque Shetlands. Once ashore, you could seek-out the gorgeous coastal scenery and sea vistas of Northmavine; unearth the ancient settlements of Jarlshof and Clickimin Broch; or even seek-out native wildlife, such as iconic Shetland ponies, seabirds, orcas and seals.

Further north, your short, yet simply unforgettable discovery of spellbinding scenery and natural wonders concludes with gentle glides by the gorgeous, uninhabited islets of Gáshólmur and Tindhólmur; the unusual, arch-shaped Drangarnir sea stack; and the picturesque village of Gásadalur, each providing unmissable photo opportunities. Sailing past Hestur Island and Mykines, where rugged coasts are a haven for seabirds – such as gannets, puffins, Arctic terns, razorbills and guillemots – is a chance to witness nature at its unspoilt best. What’s more, you get to visit Tórshavn and immerse yourself in the rich Viking history of one of the world’s smallest capital cities too.

Scenic Islands in the Summertime Itinerary

Day 1 - Edinburgh Rosyth (Scotland)

Embark your ship in Edinburgh Rosyth.

Day 2 - Cruising by the Needle (Orkney Islands) - Cruising by Old Man of Hoy

'Pinned' just off south west coast of Hoy Island, the 230 ft-high Needle is the Orkney archipelago's second-highest rock stack. Along with the legendary Old Man of Hoy, the Needle is one of the Orkney's most popular climbing hotspots, a haven for various seabird species and is a magnificent sight to admire from the comfort of your ship's decks. Next you'll see Britain’s tallest and arguably most famous sea stack, the Old Man of Hoy, which rises 450 feet out of the Atlantic Ocean on the coast of Hoy Island, in Scotland’s rugged Orkney archipelago.

Day 3 - Lerwick (Shetland Islands)

Lerwick is the friendly capital of the 100 islands and islets of the Shetland. The bustling, cosmopolitan seaport is the islands’ only town, and its wonderful natural harbour is a joy to explore. Despite the wealth created by North Sea oil, modern Lerwick retains many fascinating small shops and historic buildings. Wandering along atmospheric Commercial Street is a delight, and the Böd of Gremista – a “fishing booth” built in 1780, is now a fascinating museum.

Day 4 - Torshavn (Faroe Islands) - Cruising by Hestur - Cruising by Mykines - Cruising by Gasadalur - Cruising by Gáshólmur,Tindhólmur & Drangarnir

Tórshavn, on Streymoy Island, is the capital city of the Faroe Islands. It's known for its Old Town, Tinganes, and its curious wooden turf-roofed houses dotted across the small, rocky peninsula. Vikings discovered the islands over a thousand years ago, and established the main harbour at Tórshavn. With forts in place to protect it from pirates, it soon became a major trading centre. Many of the city’s ancient buildings are still standing and open to the public. Later, cruise past Hestur (Horse Island), famed for the variety of bird species which inhabit the craggy landscapes. You'll also cruise by Mykines, Gasadalur, Gáshólmur,Tindhólmur and Drangarnir.
