From the Dutch city of Ijmuiden, gateway to Amsterdam, sail to Norway and stroll along Bergen's iconic waterfront, Bryggen Wharf. Visit quaint Andalsnes in the heart of the stunning Romsdal district then head to Tromso, home to the magnificent Arctic Cathedral. Perhaps take the opportunity to visit the famous North Cape during your time in tiny Honningsvag, before discovering the three sides of picturesque Alta.

Admire the Art Nouveau architecture in Alesund or climb to the summit of Mount Aksla for superb views over the town, and discover Stavanger's maritime history and traditional whitewashed 18th-century houses.

Norway and the Northern Lights Itinerary

Day 1 - Portsmouth (UK)

Embark Astoria in Portsmouth.

Day 2 - Ijmuiden (Netherlands)

Ijmuiden is the largest Dutch fishing port and grew in the 1870s. Perhaps travel to Amsterdam to visit the Anne Frank House or explore the famous Van Gogh Museum to admire the largest collection of his paintings and drawings in the world.

Day 3 - At Sea

Enjoy the ship’s facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 4 - Bergen (Norway)

Bergen is beautifully located against a backdrop of seven mountains. Perhaps take the funicular ride to the summit of Mount Floien for panoramic views of Bergen, or explore the traditional wooden buildings of the colourful Bryggen wharf which house souvenir shops.

Day 5 - Åndalsnes

Andalsnes is located at the end of Romsdalfjord at the mouth of the Rauma River. The river attracted British aristocrats at the end of the 19th century. Today, it is the administrative centre of Rauma and the start of the Rauma Line, a vintage steam train journey. Perhaps take the optional excursion along the winding Troll Path Road.

Day 6 - At Sea

Day 7 - Tromsø

Tromso is located around 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle and lays claim to the world's northernmost university, cathedral and brewery. The cable car ride to the summit of Mount Storsteinen offers stunning views of the city, which is built on two islands. The Arctic Cathedral is one of the landmarks of Tromso and The Polar Museum is just one of the city's museums.

Day 8 - Honningsvåg

Honningsvaag is one of the smallest cities in Norway and lies on the south-eastern side of Mageroya island in the Barents Sea. It is the starting point of excursions to the dramatic North Cape.

Days 9-10 - Alta

Alta is the largest town in Finnmark and located on the banks of the Alta River, popular for salmon fishing. The town has three centres. Bossekop is traditional, Elvebakken is home to the airport and harbour, and the new town features a variety of shops. Large areas of woodland surround the town which is one of the best places to see the magical Northern Lights.

Day 11 - At Sea

Day 12 - Ålesund

Alesund was rebuilt in an art nouveau style following a fire in 1904. Admire the magnificent buildings with turrets and towers or walk up the 418 steps to the summit of Mount Aksla for stunning views of the town. The Jugendstilsenteret in the former Swan Pharmacy celebrates Alesund's architectural history.

Day 13 - Stavanger

Stavanger is a modern city and known as the "Oil Capital of Norway". Explore the picturesque old part with its 18th century wooden houses or admire the impressive Anglo-Norman style cathedral. Optional excursions available may include a visit to the Iron Age Farm at Ullanhaug.

Day 14 - At Sea

Enjoy the ship’s facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 15 - Portsmouth (UK)

Disembark Astoria in Portsmouth.
