Hidden Baltic Treasures & Kiel Canal Itinerary

Day 1 - Portsmouth (UK)

Embark Marco Polo in Portsmouth.

Day 2-3 - At Sea - Transit the Kiel Canal

Enjoy the ship’s facilities on a relaxing day at sea. The Kiel Canal links the North Sea to the Baltic Sea and handles around 70,000 vessels a year, more than the Panama or the Suez canals.

Day 4 - Wismar (Germany)

The medieval town of Wismar on Germany’s Baltic coast was during the 14th and 15th centuries a major trading centre of the Hanseatic League. The old quarter, with its distinctive gabled architecture and cobbled stone streets, is a wonderful legacy of Wismar’s Hanseatic heyday. Excursions from this historic city take you to Germany’s capital that until the fall of the Berlin Wall was divided between East and West. Other options include Germany’s second city Hamburg.

Day 5 - Rønne, Bornholm (Denmark)

Spend the day discovering the beautiful town of Rønne which is the capital of Bornholm Island and has always been an important trading post. The community predominantly relies on fishing and farming, but has diversified into tourism in recent years.

Day 6 - Visby, Gotland

The medieval port of Visby is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See reminders of its Hanseatic heyday as you stroll along the cobbled streets or perhaps discover some of the town's keys sights including the magnificent Powder Tower and colourful Botantical Gardens.

Day 7 - Klaipėda (Lithuania)

Klaipeda was captured by the Soviet Red Army during World War II. Today it is a thriving port city and its Old Town has magnificent 18th-century buildings, while the beautiful Theatre Square is where you'll find the neoclassical Drama Theatre. Perhaps visit the Soviet Nuclear Weapons Site to learn about Lithuania's former nuclear threat.

Day 8 - Gdynia (Poland)

Gydnia is a port city renowned for its modernist buildings including the Museum of the City of Gdynia. Picturesque Kosciuszki Square has a stunning foundation, while the Southern Pier is where you'll find the WWII destroyer ORP Blyskawica and tall ship Dar Pomorza, both now museums.

Day 9 - At Sea - Passage Great Belt (Denmark)

Enjoy the ship’s facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 10 - Fredericia (Denmark)

Fredericia is situated in the centre of Denmark and features a charming and historic midtown with cosy shops, excellent restaurants and an array of sights.

Day 11 - At Sea - Transit the Kiel Canal

Day 12 - IJmuiden (Netherlands)

IJmuiden is a busy port with plenty of history which was extensively rebuilt after being damaged during World War II. IJmuiden still a wide selection to see and do, including sea locks, sandy beaches, hidden bunkers, a national park, mansions dating back to the 1700’s and a host of museums are all easily accessible in or around the city as well as having easy connections to nearby Amsterdam. Perhaps enjoy an optional excursion to Haarlem.

Day 13 - Portsmouth

Disembark Marco Polo in Portsmouth.
