Christmas & New Year Cape Verde, Madeira & Canaries Itinerary

Day 1 - London Tilbury (UK)

Embark Magellan in London Tilbury.

Day 2 - Rotterdam (Netherlands)

Rotterdam's architecture is an intriguing mix of old and new. The city was founded in 1328 and today modern glass skyscrapers stand side-by-side with buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Day 3-4 - At Sea

Enjoy the ship’s facilities on relaxing days at sea.

Day 5 - Vigo for Santiago de Compostela (Spain)

In the Galician province of Pontevedra, situated on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, lies the city of Vigo. In 1702, an English and Dutch force fought and defeated the French and Spanish fleets anchored here. Vigo's fishing origin and strong maritime history has left an appealing old quarter with a labyrinth of steep and winding narrow streets. This is an excellent base from which to visit the towns and villages along the Vigo estuary and the Cies Isles that form part of the National Park of the Atlantic Islands. Nearby is Santiago de Compostela, Christendom's third most holy pilgrimage shrine.

Day 6 - Lisbon (Portugal)

The Portuguese capital has a quirky charm and much character. The steep, cobbled streets of the ancient Moorish Alfama district lead to wonderful viewpoints looking over the city. Perhaps enjoy a visit to the unique four-storey Belem Tower fortress, the breathtaking Jeronimos Monastery or the modern Monument to the Discoveries, shaped like the prow of a sailing ship. Lisbon's magnificent harbour is spanned by the longest suspension bridge in Europe.

Day 7-9 - At Sea

Enjoy the ship’s facilities on a relaxing day at sea. On Christmas Day, enjoy a delicious Christmas Dinner cooked by Magellan's expert chefs, enjoy the unique festivities and mingle with your new found friends.

Day 10 - Mindelo, São Vicente (Cape Verde)

Cape Verde is an archipelago made up of ten islands and eight islets. It is a remote, mountainous and unspoilt location 400 miles off the west coast of Senegal. In the days of sailing ships the wind pattern made it probable that ships sailing between Europe and the Americas or the East would find themselves passing nearby to these islands and they would call in for repairs and provisions. Surrounded by mountains, Mindelo, on Sao Vicente (St Vincent) is the largest port where you will find beautiful Portuguese colonial buildings.

Day 11 - Praia Santiago

Praia da Vitoria sits on a large bay on the island's east coast and boasts a long sandy beach and an elegant marina. Although considerably more modern than other towns in the Azores, the narrow streets of its historic centre are lined with colourful old houses which feature the traditional sash windows.

Day 12-13 - At Sea

Enjoy the ship’s facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 14 - Santa Cruz (Tenerife)

Tenerife is the largest island in the Canary archipelago and is overlooked by the imposing Mount Teide. The island's fascinating capital, Santa Cruz, is home to several museums, churches and restaurants. Perhaps visit the exotic gardens of Garcia Sanabria Park or Loro Parque, with its tropical gardens and aquarium.

Day 15 - Las Palmas (Gran Canaria)

Las Palmas is the beautiful capital of Gran Canaria and enjoys a sub-tropical climate. Its stunning beaches and soaring peaks have made it a popular destination for tourists. The capital, Las Palmas, has several beautiful parks and a historic centre with spectacular architecture. There are also fascinating museums including the Christopher Columbus Museum.

Day 16 - Arrecife (Lanzarote)

In the 15th century, Arrecife was a small fishing harbour. Today it is the capital of Lanzarote, the fourth largest island in the Canaries, located just north of the Tropic of Cancer. Perhaps enjoy duty free shopping at Calle Leon y Castila.

Day 17 - Funchal (Madeira)

Funchal is the capital of Madeira and set in a spectacular natural ampitheatre. As Columbus approaches, admire the whitewashed buildings with red tiled roofs tumbling down the mountain. A cable car runs above the city to Monte, the start of the wicker toboggan ride. Popular souvenirs include wicker baskets and the famous Madeira wine.

Day 18 - At Sea

Enjoy the ship’s facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 19 - Leixões for Oporto (Portugal)

Leixoes is the gateway to Oporto, a colourful city with soaring bell towers, baroque churches and medieval relics. Optional excursions include a boat trip on the River Douro for a different view of the city’s labyrinthine streets or why not relax in the gorgeous botanical gardens, with fountains, sculptures, giant magnolias, olive trees and stunning views of the city and Douro River.

Day 20-21 - At Sea

Enjoy the ship’s facilities on a relaxing day at sea.
