Day 1 - Lima (Peru)

Arrive in Lima, Peru's fascinating capital. To the north is the ancient city city of Caral, while in the south is the magnificent archaeological site of Pachacamac. Spanish conquistadores built magnificent churches and monasteries in the city in the 1500s, and the historic centre is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perhaps join an excursion and see the city's museums and fascinating archaeological sites, or spend time at leisure. Overnight hotel stay.

Day 2 - Cusco

This morning, transfer to the airport for your flight to Cusco. Enjoy lunch before heading to the impressive Incan Sacsayhuaman fortress. The term Sacsayhuaman means "satisifed falcon" and it was the falcon which guarded the city. The fortress took over seven decades to construct and was built without mortar. This afternoon, travel to Hacienda Urubamba located in the Sacred Valley where you'll enjoy dinner and an overnight hotel stay.

Day 3 - Ollantaytambo - Machu Picchu

After breakfast, travel to the Incan town of Ollantaytambo with its impressive fortress clinging to the cliff. The fortress was the valley's main defence and the site of a victory against the Spanish during the wars of conquest. This rose-coloured structure once housed temples and baths as well as a military barracks. Later, board the Hiram Bingham train and enjoy lunch as you travel to Machu Picchu, overlooking the Urubamba River. Discover the city's ruins and immerse yourself in history, before having tea at Machu Picchu Sanactuary Lodge. Afterwards, return to Hacienda Urubamba for another overnight stay.

Cusco was the once the centre of the Inca Empire and is home to a magnificent Baroque-style Cathedral which was built in the 1500s. Head to Koricancha and see the beautiful Dominican Convent of Santo Domingo, built on the foundations of one of the most important Inca temples, the Temple of the Sun. Spend the day exploring before transferring to the airport for your flight to Lima, where you'll embark brand new expedition ship, Roald Amundsen.
