This expedition voyage visits the iconic sights of the ancient Inca civilisation and explores the natural beauty of Panama and Costa Rica's National Parks.

Sail from Puntarenas to Quepos, gateway to the rainforest, sandy beaches and lagoons of Manuel Antonio National Park. Visit the tranquil town of Golfito in Costa Rica, close to the beautiful Piedras Blancas National Park, and UNESCO-listed Coiba National Park, a natural paradise with stunning white sandy beaches and colourful coral reefs. Cross the equator en-route to the lively town of Manta in Ecuador, a short drive from Montecristi where Panama hats are made. Visit the Peruvian city of Trujillo, gateway to the fascinating pre-Incan archaeological sites of Chan Chan and the Temples of the Sun and Moon. Disembark Roald Amundsen and fly to Cusco from where you can visit the impressive Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman which took over seven decades to construct.

Explore the beautiful town of Ollantaytambo with its rose-coloured fortress and enjoy a train ride to awe-inspiring Machu Picchu overlooking the breathtaking Urubamba River for an unforgettable day exploring the ruins. Take the opportunity to visit the magnificent Dominican Convent of Santo Domingo in Koricancha, before flying to Lima, Peru's intriguing capital, for an overnight hotel stay.

Costa Rica and Peru Itinerary

Day 1 - Puntarenas (Costa Rica)

Embark Roald Amundsen in Puntarenas.

Day 2 - Quepos

Quepos is the gateway to Manuel Antonio National Park which is renowned for its wildlife including three-toed sloths, the endangered white-faced capuchin monkey and hundreds of bird species. The landscape ranges from white sandy beaches to mangroves and rainforests with the opportunity to zip line through the forest canopies.

Day 3 - Golfito

Picturesque Golfito is located on a small gulf and offers spectacular panoramic views. Explore this peaceful town at leisure or perhaps enjoy a swim in the crystal clear waters. Nearby is the Piedras Blancas National Park with its dense rainforest, cascading waterfalls and diversity of wildlife.

Day 4 - Isla de la Coiba (Panama)

The UNESCO-listed Coiba National Park is a natural a paradise with colourful coral reefs and white sandy beaches. There are plenty of opportunities for snorkelling and hiking during your time here.

Day 5 - At sea

Roald Amundsen crosses the equator and you can take part in the Equator baptism ritual on board.

Day 6 - Manta (Ecuador)

The lively port town of Manta has stunning beaches and is often the starting point for day trips. Perhaps travel to Montecristi where the Panama hats are made. These traditional hats can take months to make and certain designs are believed to be able to hold water.

Day 7 - At sea

Enjoy the ship's facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 8 - Trujillo (Peru)

The city of Trujillo on the edge of the Andean foothills has a lot to offer, including spectacular colonial architecture. The beautiful Plaza de Armas is overlooked by the ornate cathedral and city hall, and the city's colonial mansions with their distinct wrought-iron grillwork have been well-preserved. Discover the area's pre-Incan archaeological sites on an optional excursion, including UNESCO-listed Chan Chan, translated as "sun-sun", and the spectacular Temples of the Sun and Moon.

Day 9 - At sea

Enjoy the ship's facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 10 - Callao - Lima - Cusco

Disembark ship and transfer to Lima airport for the flight to Cusco, once the centre of the Inca Empire. After lunch visit the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, a stunning example of the Inca's sophisticated construction skills, then transfer to the hotel for dinner and a 2-night stay.

Day 11 - Ollantaytambo - Machu Picchu

After breakfast, travel to the Incan town of Ollantaytambo with its impressive fortress clinging to the cliff. The fortress was the valley's main defence and the site of a victory against the Spanish during the wars of conquest. This rose-coloured structure once housed temples and baths as well as a military barracks. Later, board the Hiram Bingham train and enjoy lunch as you travel to spectacular Machu Picchu, overlooking the Urubamba River. Discover the city's ruins and immerse yourself in history, before having tea at Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. Afterwards, return to the hotel for another overnight stay.

Day 12 - Cusco - Lima - Callao

After breakfast travel to Cusco which was the once the centre of the Inca Empire and is home to a magnificent Baroque-style Cathedral which was built in the 1500s. Head to Koricancha and see the beautiful Dominican Convent of Santo Domingo, built on the foundations of one of the most important Inca temples, the Temple of the Sun. Spend the day exploring before transferring to the airport for your flight to Lima, then transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 13 - Lima

After breakfast check out of the hotel. Perhaps spend time exploring Lima's UNESCO-listed historic centre before your onward journey home.
