Day 1 - UK - Beijing (China)

Private home-to-airport transfer to London Heathrow for your flight to Beijing.

Day 2 - Beijing

On arrival, transfer to the Regent Hotel Beijing or similar for a three-night stay. Later this evening, get to know your APT Tour Director and fellow travellers during a Welcome Reception. (D)

Day 3 - Beijing

Enjoy a tour of Tiananmen Square before heading to the Forbidden City for a tour of the private section which was once used as the living quarters of Emperor Qianlong during the Qing Dynasty. Spend time at leisure then savour an authentic Peking Duck banquet in the evening. (B,L,D)

Day 4 - Beijing

Travel to the Great Wall of China and visit a rarely visited stretch of the wall, before enjoying lunch at a local restaurant which offers spectacular views of the Great Wall of China. Dinner is at leisure and afterwards there is the option to watch a Peking Opera show, a Kung Fu Show or head to the Silk Alley market. (B,L)

Day 5 - Beijing - Xi'an

This morning, visit the modern 798 Art Zone, an iconic contemporary art district home to numerous galleries and spend time at leisure before lunch. This evening, fly to Xi'an and settle into the Sofitel Legend Hotel or similar for a 2-night stay. (B,L,D)

Day 6 - Xi'an

See Xi'an's ancient city wall, before visiting a clay factory and the fascinating Terracotta Army. Tonight, watch a Tang Dynasty cultural performance with a dumpling dinner, or tour the Muslim Quarter and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. (B,L,D)

Day 7 - Xi'an - Chengdu

This morning, visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Xi'an's most iconic landmark. Here you will find the best example of a Tang-style pagoda with its square formation. This afternoon, fly to Chengdu and settling into the Grand Hyatt Hotel or similar for a 2-night stay. Explore Chengdu at your own pace this evening. (B,D)

Day 8 - Chengdu

Visit the Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Centre which houses over 100 of these photogenic creatures, including baby pandas and the lesser known red pandas. Get up close to the giant panda and learn about the breeding programme that has been set up to protect this species. This afternoon, enjoy a visit to Jinli Old Street, one of China's oldest commercial streets which showcases a diverse blend of ancient and modern China. (B,L,D)

Day 9 - Lhasa

Fly to Lhasa this morning and transfer to the InterContinental Paradise Hotel or similar for a 3-night stay. Spend the rest of the day exploring the Tibetan city of Lhasa which translates to the 'Place of the Gods'. Perhaps visit the bazaar, the largest shopping area in Tibet where you can purchase trinkets, souvenirs, fresh food, prayer flags, silver jewellery and more. (B,D)

Day 10 - Lhasa

Today, explore the most sacred sights of Lhasa which is deemed a holy land by Tibetan Buddhists. Explore the World Heritage-listed site of Potala Palace, a major pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists, and visit the 7th century Jokhang Temple which is considered the holiest place in Tibet. Spend the evening at leisure and scope the local dining options. (B,L)

Day 11 - Lhasa

Head to Norbulinka, the former summer palace of the Dalai Lama and stroll through the tranquil grounds and beautiful gardens. Then, in the afternoon, visit the Sera Monastery and witness a debate on Buddhist doctrines between monks. (B,L,D)

Day 12 - Lhasa - Chocqing

In 2019, take in a final Yangtze River photo opportunity at the Dam Site before flying to Shanghai. On arrival, board the high-speed Maglev train into the city and watch the onboard speedometer race towards an exhilarating 300 kilometres per hour before settling into the Fairmont Peace Hotel or similar for a 3-night stay. Spend time at leisure exploring the Jesuit cathedrals, Jewish synagogues, Buddhist temples and home-grown lòngtáng laneways. In 2020, transfer to the airport for your flight to Chongqing. On arrival, enjoy a tour of the city and see the hidden gems of Chongqing, a former walled-fortress city. This afternoon, board your ship, Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer. (B,L,D)

Day 13 - Fuling

Early risers can enjoy a Tai Chi class on the Observation Deck this morning. After breakfast, head into the sleepy town of Fuling and visit the extraordinary 816 Underground Project, an old nuclear site hidden in the mountains which offers a deeper insight into China's military and political history. This afternoon, perhaps attend a Chinese brush painting and calligraphy demonstration, learn how to play the ancient game of Mahjong, or take in a dumpling making session run by the ship’s chef. The Captain's Welcome Reception will take place this evening. (B,L,D)

Day 14 - Qutang Gorge - Wu Gorge - Shennong Stream - Xiling Gorge

This morning, cruise through Qutang Gorge, the shortest, narrowest and most dramatic of the Three Gorges before continuing to Wu Gorge, noted for its sheer peaks and soaring cliff faces. At Badong, transfer to a sampan (longboat), and absorb the tranquillity of the undisturbed beauty as you cruise through the Shennong Stream. Arrive at a local riverside village for a glimpse of traditional, rural Chinese life, see the local farms, tracker huts and the ancient artefacts. After lunch, pass through Xiling Gorge, the longest of the gorges. Enjoy a traditional Chinese Banquet Farewell Dinner this evening. (B,L,D)

Day 15 - Yichang - Shanghai

This morning, take in a final Yangtze River photo opportunity at the Dam Site before flying to Shanghai. Day 17 - Shanghai

Perhaps cruise the Huangpu River before visiting Yu Garden for a traditional tea ceremony. Alternatively, participate in a walking tour through the French Concession area or head to the water town of Jinxi. This evening, savour a special Farewell Dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 18 - Shanghai - London (UK)

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your onward flight home. (B)
