Best of China 2019 Itinerary

Day 1 - UK - Beijing (China)

Private home-to-airport transfer to London Heathrow for your flight to Beijing.

Day 2 - Beijing

On arrival, transfer to the Regent Hotel Beijing or similar for a three-night stay and a Welcome Reception.

Day 3 - Beijing

Enjoy a tour of Tiananmen Square before heading to the Forbidden City. Spend time at leisure then enjoy an authentic Peking Duck banquet this evening. (B,L,D)

Day 4 - Beijing

Travel to the Great Wall of China and visit a rarely visited stretch of the wall, before enjoying lunch at a local restaurant. Dinner is at leisure and afterwards there is the option to watch a Peking Opera show or a Kung Fu Show. (B,L)

Day 5 - Beijing - Yichang

Visit the Temple of Heaven, the modern 798 Art Zone, explore the Hutong district by rickshaw or visit a local calligrapher's home. Later, fly to Yichang to embark Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer. (B,L,D)

Day 6 - Xiling Gorge

Cruise through the picturesque Three Gorges region. Pass through Xiling Gorge, the longest of the gorges before enjoying a tour of the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest engineering project. Captain's Welcome Reception and Welcome Dinner this evening. (B,L,D)

Day 7 - Shennong Stream - Wu Gorge - Qutang Gorge

At Badong, transfer to a sampan (longboat), and cruise through the Shennong Stream. Continue to Wu Gorge, passing between Chijia Mountain and Baiyan Mountain then enter Qutang Gorge. (B,L,D)

Day 8 - Fengdu or Fuling

Visit the 816 Underground Project, an old nuclear site hidden in the mountains, then choose from a range activities including a Chinese painting and calligraphy demonstration, a lesson on the ancient game of Mahjong, a lesson in Mandarin or a dumpling-making session. Emperor's Farewell Dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 9 - Chongqing - Xi'an

Visit the famous giant pandas at Chongqing Zoo. Later, fly to Xi'an and choose where to dine. Two-night stay at Shangri-La Hotel, Xi'an. (B,L,D)

Day 10 - Xi'an

See Xi'an's ancient city wall, before visiting the Terracotta Army. Tonight, watch a Tang Dynasty cultural performance with a dumpling dinner, or tour the Muslim Quarter and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. (B,L,D)

Day 11 - Xi'an - Shanghai

Fly to Shanghai. Enjoy a ride on the high-speed Maglev train on arrival, before choosing where to dine. Three-night stay at the Fairmont Peace Hotel. (B,D)

Day 12 - Shanghai

Enjoy a tour of Shanghai with a local guide and visit Jin Mao Tower. Enjoy premium seating at an acrobatic show this evening. (B,L)

Day 13 - Shanghai

Enjoy a cruise on the Huangpu River before visiting Yu Garden for a traditional tea ceremony. Alternatively, participate in a walking tour through the French Concession area or head to the water town of Jinxi. Farewell Dinner this evening. (B,L,D)

Day 14 - Shanghai - UK

Transfer to the airport for your return flight back to the UK. (B)

Disembark your cruise in Chongqing where you’ll board your high speed train to Chengdu. Upon arrival, head out for a stroll along the lantern-lined Jinli Old Street to peruse the local stalls and cafes. Choose where in your hotel you’d like to dine tonight. Stay at the Grand Hyatt, Chengdu for a two-night stay. (B,L,D)

Day 10 - Chengdu

The morning is off to a delightful start with a Signature Experience. Visit the famed Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Cuddly and curious, the giant panda is China’s national treasure, and this facility is dedicated to their conservation through education. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to spend how you wish. (B,L)

Day 11 - Chengdu - Xi'an

After breakfast head to the airport for your flight to Xi’an. This afternoon, join a city tour. Visit the ancient city wall, constructed in the 14th century during the early Ming Dynasty. Tonight, choose your sightseeing. Stay at the Shangri-La Hotel, Xi'an. (B,L,D)

Day 12 - Xi'an

Today you will explore one of the oldest cities in China. Head to a clay factory where terracotta soldiers are still being made. Spend the afternoon at the Museum of Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses and the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum. (B,L,D)

Day 13 - Xi'an - Shanghai

Today you’ll fly to Shanghai. On arrival, jump on the high-speed Maglev train which travels at an exhilarating 300 kilometres per hour. From Jesuit cathedrals, Jewish synagogues and Buddhist temples, you’ll notice right away the diverse range of architectural styles in Shanghai. Stay at the Fairmont Peace Hotel for three nights. Day 14 - Shanghai

This morning, head down to Shanghai’s waterfront for a Tai Chi lesson taught by a master. Veer off the beaten path and discover a new side to Shanghai with a vintage convertible Jeep ride. Later, stop at the Jin Mao Tower and take an elevator to the 88th floor viewing deck, where you’ll be whipping out your camera to capture those panoramic views of the city. This evening, enjoy your final Signature Experience - the best seats in the house for an acrobatic show. (B,L)

Day 15 - Shanghai

Perhaps cruise the Huangpu River through the heart of the city, then explore Yu Garden and enjoy a traditional Chinese tea ceremony before a dim sum lunch. Or, you may prefer to join a walking tour through the French Concession area. Your final option is a full day excursion to Jinxi, an ancient water town. Discover the 36 bridges which arch over the town’s many water alleys, all built over several different dynasties. You’ll have time at leisure to explore before returning to the city. (B,L,D)

Day 16 - Shanghai - UK

Your incredible journey through China draws to an end. We’ll transfer you to the airport for your flight to London.
