Burgundy and Provence 2018 Itinerary
Day 1 - UK - Lyon (France)
Fly from the UK to Lyon and transfer to the ship to embark SS Catherine. (D)
Day 2 - Beaune
Enjoy a tour of the famous Hospices de Beaune, a architectural jewel that has become the symbol of Burgundy. Founded in the 15th century, the Hospices were given some vineyards so they could make wine to auction off to support charities. This custom continues today. Captains welcome dinner this evening. In 2019, there is also a Macon walking discovery tour. (B,D)
Day 3 - Lyon
Today stroll through Lyon’s world-famous food market or explore the city’s old Quartier St. Jean, as you follow in the steps of the great silk weavers. Discover impressive medieval and Renaissance architecture, including the Cour des Loges and La Tour Rose, before meeting a modern-day silk weaver. Alternately, if you’re feeling active, take advantage of the city’s extensive network of bike paths on a guided cycle tour. This evening there is an evening tour of the city's illuminated buildings (2018 only). (B,L,D)
Day 4 - Tournon - Tain L'Hermitage - Viviers
The twin cities of Touron and Tain L'Hermitage nestled among famous vineyards. They provide the perfect setting for those who are true connoisseurs of wine and chocolate. Sample some of the excellent Cote du Rhone wines on a village stroll with wine tasting or join the guided hike through the world-famous vineyards followed by a wine tasting. (B,L,D)
Day 5 - Viviers
In 2018, Viviers retains much of its historic charm and was once an important regional capital, with stone houses dating to the Middle Ages, still lining the tiny lanes. You’ll walk through its charming Old Town, seeing a mix of medieval and Renaissance structures, before climbing Rue du Château to reach St. Vincent Cathedral. After enjoying the stunning views, you’ll be welcomed into the 12th century cathedral for a lovely recital of music composed by Puccini, Bach, and Handel. Then enjoy a demonstration of clay pot making followed by an aperitif of local delicacies, or enjoy the aperitif at a private mansion. In 2019, guests on Connoisseur Collection cruises will enjoy a truffle hunting experience. (B,L,D)
Day 6 - Avignon
Visit the fortified city of Avignon, often referred to as the "City of Popes", where you can see the magnificent Palais des Papes. Enjoy a walking tour with highlights including the Clocktower Square and the Pope's Palace Square. Alternatively, in 2018 go off the beaten track with a walk through parks, orchards and secret squares or perhaps enjoy a kayak ride on the Gardon River (only available on May-Sep departures). In 2019, the alternative tour is a visit to the Pont du Gard Aqueduct or perhaps choose from two optional excursions - cooking lesson at a hotel or regional wine tasting at Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Day 7 - Tarascon (Arles or Tarascon)
Enjoy a walking tour of Arles with highlights including the Ampitheatre and the Baths of Constantine. Alternatively, explore the heart of Tarascon with its Provencal architecture. Captain's Farewell Dinner this evening. (B,L,D)
Day 8 - Avignon - Marseille - UK
Disembark SS Catherine and transfer to Marseilles Airport for return flight to the UK. (B)
