Delve into the rich culture of ancient and modern Spain, cruise through the beautiful Douro Valley and see the celebrated wine regions of Portugal.

Begin with a 2-night hotel stay in Portugal's capital, Lisbon and see all the highlights on a guided tour including the iconic Belem Tower and Manueline Jeronimos Monastery. Travel to Porto where you will join your ship, Queen Isabel, for a 7-night cruise along the picturesque Douro River.

Stroll through historic Porto, overlooked by a majestic cathedral, explore UNESCO-listed Guimaraes with its well-preserved Old Town, and see the ornate Our Lady of Remedies church in Lamego. Travel from Vega de Terron to the sandstone city of Salamanca in Spain. Enjoy a walk through the Plaza Mayor, lined with baroque buildings, visit the university and discover an array of foods in the food hall, before heading to Madrid for a 3-night hotel stay, with included city tour and traditional flamenco show.

Jewels of Spain and the Douro River Itinerary

Day 1 - UK - Lisbon (Portugal)

Fly from the UK to Lisbon. Transfer to your hotel for the next two nights.

Day 2 - Lisbon

Take a guided tour of Lisbon with highlights including the iconic Belem Tower and Padrao dos Descobrimentos, a monument to Portugal's great explorers. You can also visit the magnificent Jeronimos Monastery with its elaborate scrollwork. Sample the traditional cream custard tart, the pasteis de nata, at Pasteis de Belem then continue your motorcoach tour through the Rossio, Lisbon's busiest square.

Day 3 - Lisbon - Obidos - Porto

This morning, board a motorcoach and travel through the scenic countryside towards Porto, stopping at the medieval village of Obidos. A guided stroll takes you past whitewashed baroque churches, the church of Santa Maria and the 16th-century aqueduct. Perhaps climb to the top of the castle for spectacular panoramic views. Later, embark Queen Isabel to begin your Douro cruise.

Day 4 - Porto

A panoramic tour of dynamic Porto will show you the city’s top sights including the Clerigos Tower, UNESCO-listed Stock Exchange and the hilltop cathedral. Alternatively, you can "Do as the Locals Do," with a walking tour which includes local tastings and a vintage tram ride.

Day 5 - Guimaraes

Visit historic Guimaraes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its well-preserved Old Town has unique architecture and beautiful little plazas. Join a guide and walk from the castle towards the main square, the Largo da Oliveria, and on to the Monastery and Church of Our Lady of Oliveria and Padrao do Salado. Alternatively, explore the Ribeira district on foot, one of Porto's oldest neighbourhoods.

Day 6 - Amarante

Take an excursion to Quinta Aveleda, famous for its gardens and its delectable Vinho Verde, which you are welcome to sample. Later, learn how Port is made during a lecture at the Douro Museum. See the exhibits and sample some of the regional wine.

Day 7 - Lamego

The spectacular Our Lady of Remedies church towers over picturesque Lamego. Board a motorcoach and travel up the hill to this magnificent church. Later, enjoy a glass of local wine at the Quinta da Pacheca. Alternatively, join the stroll to Pinhao station.

Day 8 - Pinhao

Travel from Pinhao up the steep streets to Quinta do Seixo, a prestigious and state-of-the-art Port wine estate. You’ll have an opportunity to sample some of their exceptional Ports and admire splendid views from the estate’s tasting room. Alternatively, join a guided hike up a family-owned quinta and see how the vineyards are tended and grapes harvested. There will be the chance to sample some of the wines. Whichever excursion you choose, you'll spend the afternoon cruising one of the most beautiful stretches of the Douro.

Day 9 - Castelo Rodrigo

Visit the 12th century walled village of Castelo Rodrigo. Take in the stunning view from the ancient stone walls before strolling along the cobbled lanes of the village, passing the Manueline church and town's market square. You'll get to try some of the delicious local treats and enjoy a cup of tea at a newly restored tea-house. Alternatively, head to the Portugal's first archaeological park, Foz Coa. Visit the Coa Museum before joining your guide and heading into the valley. Gala Dinner on board.

Day 10 - Vega de Terron - Salamanca (Spain) - Madrid

Disembark Queen Isabel in Vega de Terron and travel to Salamanca in Spain to visit its extraordinary Old and New Cathedrals. Join your guide and walk through the Plaza Mayor, lined with baroque buildings, to the university. The plateresque facade is amazing and the interior rooms are equally as beautiful. Continue to Salamanca's food hall and on to Rua Mayor with its many shops. Transfer to your hotel in Madrid. After checking in, join the 'Madrid at Your Doorstep' walk to get acquainted with the city.

Day 11 - Madrid

Your panoramic tour of Madrid will take you to some of the city's most famous sights or take a guided active walk through the city. Both tours are followed by the Prado Museum which features some of the finest examples of European art and enjoy a flamenco show in the evening with dinner at one of Madrid's finest venues.

Day 12 - Madrid - Toledo

Take an excursion to Toledo, known as the 'City of Three Cultures' as it has been heavily influenced by Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Enjoy refreshments as you take in the colourful colonial gardens of Hacienda el Carral, before starting your walking tour. Step through the medieval city gate which leads to the Jewish Quarter. Admire the stunning Synagogue Santa Maria la Blanca with its white horseshoe arches. Later, spend time at leisure.

Day 13 - Madrid - UK

Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
