Golden River Douro Itinerary
Day 1 - UK - Lisbon (Portugal)
Fly from the UK to Lisbon where you will be met at the airport and transferred to Hotel Tivoli Lisboa or similar in the heart of Lisbon. Relax this afternoon and evening or begin exploring the city a bit on your own.
Day 2 - Lisbon
Take a guided tour of Lisbon, beginning at Belem with a tour of Jeronimos Monastery and Tower of Belem, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Walk up the hill to the Alfama District and learn about Lisbon's history. Guests sailing on Viking Osfrid and Viking Helgrim will enjoy a guided tour of the Maritime Museum, located in the monastery’s West Wing. (B)
Day 3 - Porto
Check out of the hotel after breakfast and take a scenic ride up the Portuguese coast to Porto. Stop at Coimbra, birthplace of six Portuguese kings. Arrive in Porto and proceed to the dock to board your ship. (B,L,D)
Day 4 - Regua - Pinhao
Cruise along the Douro to Regua. Take an included tour of Vila Real, site of the Mateus Palace, a stunning Baroque building. You can also enjoy an optional tour of an iconic port wine-making institution. Rejoin your ship in Pinhao for dinner. (B,L,D)
Day 5 - Barca d'Alva
Cruise along the Douro to Barca d'Alva. This afternoon, enjoy a tour of Castelo Rodrigo with its narrow streets and charming houses which still present 16th-century facades. See Sinagoga Street, a reminder of the Jewish community. (B,L,D)
Day 6 - Salamanca (Spain) - Vega de Terron
Today you have a full-day excursion to Salamanca, Spain. This ancient city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a living museum that takes visitors back to the Middle Ages, yet it is a cosmopolitan, multicultural city. Take a ride through the Iberian countryside then explore the city in free time. Your afternoon guided city tour takes you to the Gothic House of Shells, the 13th-century Salamanca University and the New Cathedral, built from 1513 through 1733. Rejoin your ship in Vega de Terron. Day 7 - Pinhao (Portugal)
Arrive in Pinhao and travel to the village of Favaios. For lunch dine at Quinta da Avessada. (B,L,D)
Day 8 - Regua
Arrive in Regua and take an included excursion to Lamego, a town famous for its Baroque Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies church, dating back to the 14th century. You'll also see the 12th-century Lamego Castle. (B, L, D)
Day 9 - Porto
Enjoy a city tour of Porto this morning, then enjoy time at leisure this afternoon. Alternatively join an optional excursion to historic Guimaraes. (B,L,D)
Day 10 - Porto - UK
After breakfast, disembark and proceed to the airport for your return flight to the UK. (B)
