From the picture-postcard islands of the Caribbean, cross the equator to the verdant Brazilian coast and on to the majestic Amazon River on this unique holiday.

Explore the beautiful city of Philipsburg on the Dutch side of St Maarten, before cruising to Terres-de-Haut, the largest island in the idyllic Les Saintes archipelago. Soak up the French ambiance and enjoy the relaxed tempo. Discover the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Barbados and learn about the history of Devils Island, once home to one of the most infamous prisons.

Prinsendam then sets sail for the mighty Amazon, calling first at the picturesque city of Macapa near the mouth of the river. Santarem is the gateway to the breathtaking National Forest Tapajos and where the brown waters of the Amazon meet the blue-green Rio Tapajos, while the Indian village of Boca da Valeria has remained unchanged for centuries.

Spend two days in Manaus, a city which thrived during the rubber boom of the 19th and 20th centuries, before continuing to Parintins and Alter do Chao. Prinsendam then arrives in in Icoaraci, your gateway to the fascinating city of Belem, one of the first settlements on the Amazon River and home to magnificent neo-classical buildings.

Known as Robinson Crusoe Island, Tobago boasts golden beaches and crystal clear waters, while the 'Spice Island' of Grenada offers dramatic scenery and vast plantations. The last port of call is historic Santo Domingo which is home to the oldest surviving European fortress in the Caribbean.

Amazon Explorer Itinerary

Day 1 - Fort Lauderdale (USA)

Arrive in Fort Lauderdale and embark Prinsendam.

Day 2 -3 - At sea

Enjoy the facilities on board during a couple of relaxing days at sea.

Day 4 - Philipsburg (St Maarten)

St Maarten is an island with two very different sides, a Dutch side and a French side. Philipsburg is the main city on the Dutch side. Beautiful beachfront bars line picturesque Great Bay while Voorstraat offers a selection of duty-free shops and casinos. St Maarten is also home to a zoo and a museum containing artifacts from the indigenous Arawak people.

Day 5 - Terres-de-Haut (Guadeloupe)

Terres-de-Haut is the largest island in the Les Saintes archipelago and some of the oldest islanders can trace their roots back to Breton and Norman colonists. The island has a French ambiance and a very slow, relaxed tempo. There is a lively international sailing scene and is also very popular with divers due to the healthy coral reefs in the surrounding waters. Bourg des Saintes is the main village on the island and has charming whitewashed houses with red roofs.

Day 6 - Bridgetown (Barbados)

Glorious golden beaches and towering palms with names like Paradise Beach and Silver Sands, crystal clear turquoise waters and beautifully landscaped gardens can be found in Bridgetown. Experience the distinctively British atmosphere in the historic old section of town, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 7 - At sea

Relax on board as you cruise to Devils Island.

Day 8 - Devils Island (French Guiana)

Devil's Island is located in the Iles du Salut archipelago in French Guiana. Devil's Island was home to one of the most infamous and impregnable prisons of the 19th and 20th centuries. Nowadays the island is peaceful and ringed by swaying coconut palms.

Day 9 - At sea (Brazil)

Prisendam cruises the Barra Norte Sea and the Amazon River Bar.

Day 10 - Macapa - Amazon River - Equator

The beautiful city of Macapa is located near the mouth of the mighty Amazon River. Perhaps visit the Museu Sacaca or the Fortress Museum of San Jose de Macapa. Later, Prinsendam cruises the Amazon River and crosses the Equator.

Day 11 - Santarem

The lively port town of Santarem is where the brown waters of the Amazon meet the blue-green Rio Tapajos. Santarem is gateway to the National Forest Tapajos, as well as the diverse Amazon rainforest.

Day 12 - Boca da Valeria

The Indian village of Boca Da Valeria is located on a hill overlooking the Amazon. It is close to Santarem and Parintins. Discover traditional log canoes and grass huts and a way of life unchanged since the time of early explorers.

Day 13 - 14 - Manaus

Founded by the Portuguese in 1669, Manaus is located 1,000 miles from the sea on the Negro River near its confluence with the Amazon River. It became one of the world's wealthiest cities at the height of the rubber boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and some of its former glory lingers in some of the grand buildings dotted about the city.

Day 15 - Parintins

The city of Parintins is located on Tupinambarana Island in the mighty Amazon River. It was discovered by Jose Goncalves da Fonseca in 1749. Every June, the city hosts a popular folklore festival called Boi-Bumba.

Day 16 - Alter do Chao

Just west of Santarem is picturesque Alter do Chao which is renowned for its Ilha do Amor or Island of Love. With its beachfront restaurants and calm waters, the island is a great place to relax. The town of Alter do Chao has a lagoon which is home to abundant wildlife and which is easily explored by canoe.

Day 17 - At sea

Prisendam crosses the equator and continues cruising the Amazon river, before reaching the Barra Norte River and Amazon River Bar.

Day 18 - At sea

Prisendam cruises the Barra Norte Sea and crosses the equator.

Day 19 - Icoaraci (Belem)

Icoraci is your gateway to the city of Belem. Belem was one of the first settlements along Brazil's Amazon River. The neoclassical-style 1874 Theatro da Paz is testament to the opulence of the city's past. Perhaps take the excursion along this majestic Amazon river's creeks and channels to view homes built on stilts and enjoy a walk through the jungle.

Day 20 - 22 - At sea

Prisendam crosses the equator before spending a further two days at sea.

Day 23 - Scarborough (Trinidad and Tobago)

Tobago is known as Robinson Crusoe island and offers beautiful beaches and tranquil waters. Try traditional Caribbean cuisine, including pepper pot, a specialty pork and beef stew, during your time here, or perhaps head to the 18th-century Fort King George which dominates the town of Scarborough.

Day 24 - Saint Georges (Grenada)

The beautiful port of Saint Georges is the capital of Grenada, known as the 'Spice Island'. Admire the dramatic mountainous scenery and vast plantations of cocoa and banana. The town's steep streets and alleyways lead to the busy marketplace. Perhaps enjoy a walk to the hilltop fort for panoramic views.

Day 25 - At sea

Enjoy the facilities on board as you spend a day at sea.

Day 26 - Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic)

Historic Santo Domingo was founded by Bartolome Columbus in 1496, and the bones of the explorer Christopher Columbus lie in the old fort on the Ozama River. In the cobbled streets of the Zona Colonial there is one of the oldest churches and the oldest surviving European fortress in the Caribbean.

Day 27 - 28 - At sea

Spend a relaxing couple of days at sea as Prisendam cruises to Fort Lauderdale.

Day 29 - Fort Lauderdale (USA)

Disembark Prisendam in Fort Lauderdale.
