Archaeological remains from ancient Rome, art-stuffed churches, and the treasures of Vatican City vie for your attention, but Rome is also a wonderful place to practice the Italian-perfected il dolce far niente, the sweet art of idleness. Your most memorable experiences may include sitting at a caffè in the Campo de' Fiori or strolling in a beguiling piazza.

• Day 2 Livorno

  As the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence and its historic center is bursting with elegant squares, imposing palaces, magnificent churches, incredible art galleries and museums with an abundance of riches.

• Day 3 Livorno
• Day 4 Portoferraio

  Elba is undoubtedly best known for its connection with Napoleon, as the site of his first exile, and the numerous treasures he left behind can be viewed in the villa of San Martino and the Demidoff Museum.

• Day 5 Sorrento

  A warming sun and gentle sea breezes have been attracting visitors to Sorrento for two millennia, and its reputation as a playground of the ancient rich and famous have resulted in lavish villas and palaces.

• Day 6 Amalfi

  Wedged ravine, encircled by sheer cliffs, into the mouth of a facing blue waters and where terraced hillsides support lemon groves (and of course limoncello), Amalfi requires a camera with lots of memory.

• Day 7 Catania

  Mountainous and rugged, Sicily’s highest point is the tip of that infamous and still active Mt. Etna, and as a result Catania is richly layered, having been buried under lava seven times in recorded history.

• Day 8 Crotone

  Bathed in the golden Mediterranean sun and caressed by gentle sea breezes, Crotone, Italy, beckons visitors with its ancient allure. Delve into the local culture by visiting the Archaeological Park of Capo Colonna, home to the iconic Temple of Hera Lacinia.

• Day 9 Taranto

  Founded by the Spartans in 706 BC, and known as “the city of the two seas”, Taranto’s long and proud history is set against a countryside of gentle hills and valleys, beautiful stretches of beaches, rocky cliffs, and sapphire-blue waters.

• Day 10 Kotor

  One of Europe’s best-preserved cities of medieval or Renaissance vintage, Kotor’s walls were constructed right into the slopes of the mountain behind it, making it an amazing sight on approach from the sea.

• Day 12 Chioggia

  Experience Venice, one of the most captivating-and romantic-cities in the world. Tour the city’s cobblestone streets and overarching bridges, or take to the water and explore the canals on a water taxi or gondola. As you make your way through the city, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to shop, sample delicious Veneto wines, or people watch in Piazza San Marco.
