The Route of Great Viking Explorers Itinerary

Day 1 - Bergen (Norway)

Spend some time exploring the wonderful city of Bergen at leisure. Perhaps visit the UNESCO-listed Bryggen district with colourful wharves that date back to the 14th century or enjoy a trip on the Fløibanen Funicular before embarking MS Spitsbergen.

Day 2 - Værlandet/Bulandet and Atløy/Nærvik

Arrive at the westernmost archipelago of Norway, situated northwest of Bergen. We will attempt to make landings both in the morning and in the afternoon, taking you to some of the most interesting sites of the area. If conditionals allow, this may include scaling the “Norwegian Horse” on the island of Alden. This steep 480-metre mountain rises from the sea in the shape of a horse. Look out for rare white-tailed sea eagles as you leave Norway.

Day 3 - Lerwick (Shetland Islands)

Lerwick was founded as an unofficial marketplace to service 17th-century Dutch herring fleets. The island supported the Norwegian resistance in WWII by taking in Norwegian refugees and sending fishing boats loaded with arms and ammunition. This flow of vessels to and from Norway became known as "The Shetland Bus” and the Lerwick continues to have a strong bond with Norway to the present day. Today, the cosmopolitan seaport has a lively waterfront as well as gorgeous scenery and extraordinary archaeological sites, including two remarkable Iron Age villages.

Day 4 - Kirkwall (Orkney Islands)

The well-preserved town of Kirkwall is the capital of the Orkney archipelago and is dominated by the spectacular St Magnus Cathedral. A local saga tells the story of how Magnus, kidnapped from the islands, refused to fight with the Vikings or condone their violence. When Magnus eventually returned home, he was put to death for his pacifism, and the church was named for his memory.

Day 5 - Tórshavn (Faroe Islands)

Torshavn is one of the smallest capital cities in the world and was once the site of an annual Viking gathering. It was founded in the 10th century, and might very well be the oldest capital in northern Europe. The old part of the town boasts characteristic red buildings with turf-covered roofs clustered on a narrow peninsula. The wild and dramatic landscape of the Faroe Islands is a magnificent backdrop when exploring this charming town on foot.

Day 6 - Faroe Islands Exploration

Our experienced Captain, Expedition Leader and local experts will coordinate a unique nature landing.

Day 7 - Eiði

In the 9th century AD, Eiði was settled by Vikings and today offers fascinating history as well as beautiful hiking trails. Perhaps join a short walk to the 343-metre-high promontory of Eiðiskollur, from which you can admire the outstanding views of Atlantic breakers crashing on the rocks below.

Day 8 - Mykines

Mykines is a paradise for bird lovers as its layers of soft volcanic tuff and eroded basalt create excellent nesting conditions for birds. During the summer months, bird species such as guillemots, atlantic puffins, northern fulmars and kittiwakes arrive on the island to nest and breed meaning that Mykines hosts some of the richest bird cliffs in the world.

Day 9 - At Sea

Enjoy the ship’s facilities on a relaxing day at sea. Perhaps listen to an insightful lecture from the expedition team or join one of the workshops.

Day 10 - Heimaey (Iceland)

The Westman Islands are located off Iceland's south coast, dominated by the Eldfjall, Heimaey is the only inhabited island in the Vestman archipelago. Heimaey is an island buzzing with wildlife with its spectacular vertical cliffs occupied by multitudes of birds including puffins, fulmars and guillemots. Reefs, marine caves and the ever-changing ocean is home to seals and cetaceans such as the killer whale.

Day 11 - Reykjavik

Disembark MS Spitsbergen in Reykjavik.

Due to navigational reasons, the Captain reserves the right to modify the itinerary.
