Iceland Circumnavigation
Day 1 - Reykjavik (Iceland)
Arrive in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik and make your own way to the hotel, Fosshotel or similar.
Day 2 - Hvalfjordur
After breakfast at the hotel, a transfer is included to the pier to board Greg Mortimer. Sail into Hvalfjördur, a beautiful fjord just north of Reykjavik with wide areas of flat verdant land along majestic mountains, and beaches cut with creeks. The fjord is approximately 30 km / 19 mi long and 5 km / 3 miles wide. The area is rich in bird life and is home to seals, perfect for zodiac cruising, kayaking and hikes.. It was once one of the main whaling stations in Iceland and today the old whaling station remains along with a war museum. (B,L,D)
Day 3 - Stykkisholmur - Snaefellnes Peninsula - Latrabjarg cliffs
Stykkisholmur is the starting point for adventures on the Snaefellnes Peninsula, the gateway to Snaefellsjokull National Park. Sktykkisholmur is located on the north of the peninsula and has a beautiful old city centre with houses once owned by Danish traders. The region is diverse and characterised by lava fields and magnificent fjords, all overlooked by the Snaefellsjokull volcano. Disembark the ship and enjoy a full day excursion with highlights including Arnarstapi and its arctic tern colony, Bjarnarhofn and the shark museum, and Grundarfjordur. Rejoin the ship and cruise past the Latrabjarg cliff, home to a large population of razorbills and puffins. (B,L,D)
Days 4-5 - Westfjords
Spend the next two days exploring the Westfjords region with its dramatic fjords and sheer mountains. The area has beautiful towns including Isafjordur and is home to iconic sights including the famous Dynjandi waterfall. You may be able to visit the Hornstrandir peninsula with its towering bird cliffs. (B,L,D)
Day 6 - Akureyri - Lake Myvatn
Explore Akureyri's beautiful old town with its well-preserved period houses before heading inland to the stunning Myvatn region. Choose from two excursions. The first takes in the incredible Godafoss Waterfall, Namaskaro with its mud springs, and Asbyrgi, a forested canyon. The second is a visit to Akureyri Public Park and Botanic Garden, one of the northern most botanical gardens in the world. (B,L,D)
Day 7 - Husavik - Grimsey Island
Grimsey is a verdant island known for its proximity to the Arctic Circle. Many people head to the island to say they have stepped across the imaginary line. Grimsey is perfect for Zodiac cruising, kayaking and photography. Leaving Grimsey, spend time surveying the waters of Skjalfandi Bay around Husavik, known as Iceland's whale watching capital. (B,L,D)
Day 8 - Mjoifjordur
Mjoifjordur is a hidden gem on Iceland's east coast. It is ideal for kayaking and Zodiac cruising. It has spectacular waterfalls, verdant hills and colourful flora lining its shores. At Asknes are the remains of an old whaling station, while on the way to Brekkuporp is a shipwreck, a haunting reminder of the town's whaling past. (B,L,D)
Day 9 - Hofn - Vatnajokull National Park
The lively fishing town of Hofn is the gateway to Vatnajokull National Park which is home to Europe's largest glacier, Vatnajokull. You'll also hike in Skaftafell National Park, keeping an eye out for birds, reindeers and seals. Inside the national park is the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, filled with floating icebergs which wash up on the shore. Enjoy an amphibian boat excursion on the lagoon. (B,L,D)
Day 10 - Westman Islands
The Westman Islands are located off Iceland's south coast. Cruise past UNESCO-listed Surtsey Island, one of the youngest land masses on earth. The Westman Islands are considered to have the largest Atlantic puffin colony in the world. Heimaey is the archipelago's main island and a visit to the weather station offers bird-watching opportunities. You'll also learn about the Eldfell eruption of 1973 at the Eldheimar museum. (B,L,D)
Day 11 - Reykjavik
After breakfast, disembark and transfer to downtown Reykjavik or Keflavik airport.(B) Please note: At the conclusion of the voyage, we do not recommend booking flights departing prior to 12.00 pm on the day of disembarkation in case there are delays.
