Ancient Greece Odyssey Itinerary

Day 1 - UK - Athens (Greece)

Fly from the UK to Athens and transfer to the hotel for a 2-night stay.

Day 2 - Athens

Visit the ancient Acropolis, dominated by the majestic Parthenon, and the theatre of Dionysos. In the new Acropolis Museum walk on the floors of glass above the excavations for an extraordinary view of the ruins.

Day 3 - Delphi

Drive to sacred Delphi, with a stop en-route at Osios Loukas Monastery. Enjoy breathtaking views from Delphi, then walk the sacred way, visit the treasuries, the Grand Temple of Apollo and the theatre. Discover ancient wonders dating back to the 5th century in the Museum, including the Charioteer. Overnight hotel stay in Delphi.

Day 4 - Piraeus

Drive to the famous Corinth Canal for a photo stop then visit the ancient city of Corinth to see the Temple of Apollo, the ruins of the Market Place and the Fountain of Priene. Drive to the World Heritage Site of Epidaurus, which was known throughout the Hellenic world for its healing treatments, and see the extremely well preserved theatre before enjoying a traditional Greek lunch. Embark Aegean Odyssey in Piraeus.

Day 5 - Tinos

Visit the sleepy island of Tinos where the beautiful countryside is dotted with pretty villages and ornate dovecots, a legacy from the Venetians.

Day 6 - Volos

Enjoy an excursion from Volos to the Byzantine monasteries of Meteora, built on top of huge rock towers. Visit the oldest monastery, Agios Stephanos, which is now a convent and has an icon museum in its 15th-century church. Next, climb up 150 steps to reach the Varlaam Monastery for stupendous views of the Pindus Range and to see the famous frescoes.

Day 7 - Thessalonica

Today there is a choice of two tours - an exploration of the Byzantine heritage of Thessalonica, including the 5th-century basilica Agios Dimítrios, the Rotunda and the Byzantine Museum, or a trip to Dion, founded in the 5th century at the foot of Mount Olympus, to explore the Archaeological Park, the Roman baths, the Villa of Dionysos and the museum. There is also an optional trip (extra cost) to the archaeological museum near Pella to gain an insight into daily life in this ancient city, followed by a trip to the burial site of Macedonia's kings.

Day 8 - Mount Athos

Enjoy the ship's facilities on a relaxing day cruising past Mount Athos.

Day 9 - Kavala

From Kavala visit the city of Philippi, named after Philip of Macedonia and visit the stream where St Paul's first European convert to Christianity was baptised. Tour this fascinating archaeological site including the large Roman forum, sacred gates and the reputed jail of St Paul.

Day 10 - Samothraki

Explore Samothraki, a forested island which is home to one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece: the ancient Thracian Sanctuary of the Great Gods. The Aegean’s highest peak, Mt Fengari, lies on the island and legend has it that Poseidon, god of the sea, watched the Trojan War unfold from here.

Day 11 - Chios

The magical island of Chios has a history dating back to the Neolithic Age and also claims to be the birthplace of Homer.

Day 12 - Patmos

The Christian pilgrimage site of Patmos is home to the Cave of the Apocalypse where St John once lived. Continue to the 12th-century village of Chora and the Monastery of St John the Theologian, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Following the tour there will be free time to explore Chora with its beautiful Byzantine churches and whitewashed houses.
