Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands

Day 1 - San José (Costa Rica)

Arrive in San José, the vibrant Costa Rican city centre. Spend the day exploring this Central American metropolis before staying overnight in a hotel.

Day 2 - Puerto Limón

After breakfast, head to the Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean coast and trek through the tropical rainforest. Next, enjoy a boat ride along Tortuguero canal before transferring to your ship Fram.

Day 3 - Bocas del Toro

Cruise along the Caribbean coast of Panama to Bocas del Toro; one of Panama's most visited eco-tourism destinations. Bocos del Toro is known as the 'Galapagos of the Caribbean' and is one of the most biologically diverse places on the planet housing Panama's first National Marine Park. Perhaps take the opportunity to get a taste of life in a Ngabe village and learn about organic cacao on a chocolate tour. Or take a boat tour to the picturesque islands of Cayo Zapatilla and Cayo Coral to snorkel in the crystal clear waters and relax on the white sand beaches.

Day 4 - Panama Canal

Today, leave the Caribbean and enter Panama Canal. Experience the thrill of canal transit and the intricacy of the locks system firsthand, as Fram is lifted more than 26 metres (85ft) above sea level, from one body of water to the next.

Day 5 - Puerto Pina

Arrive midday in the small coastal community of Puerto Piña which sits next to Bahía Piña, a narrow bay between two promontories that are frequented by humpback whales and bottlenose dolphins. Numerous fishing world records have been broken in Bahía Piña and the bay boasts an abundance of diverse marine life including sharks, dolphins, rays and humpback whales. Spend the day hiking along the jungle trails, kayaking or relaxing on the tranquil beach.

Day 6 - At Sea

Make the most of the Expedition team's insightful lecture programme during this day at sea.

Day 7 - Isla de la Plata

This afternoon, arrive at Isla de la Plata, part of Machalilla National Park, Ecuador’s only coastal national park. Isla de la Plata boasts an abundance of marine birdlife including blue-footed boobies, nesting waved albatrosses and frigate birds. Perhaps join a spectacular guided nature hike which visits one of the highest points on the island for stunning views and great opportunities to spot wildlife. Alternatively, spend the day swimming and snorkelling amongst the magnificent coral reef.

Day 8 - At Sea

Day 9 - Salaverry (Peru)

The small port of Salaverry leads the way to Trujillo and its real highlight is the ancient Chimu kingdom (700-1400 A.D.), which built its capital by the banks of the Moche River. The ancient city of Chan Chan ("Sun Sun"), in Trujillo, covers an area of 20 square km and was constructed with clay, mud, pebbles, straw and cane. Explore the ancient excavated city of Chan Chan on an optional guided tour or discover the highlights of Trujillo and the remarkable Sun and Moon temples during an optional city tour.

Once in Quito, spend the day at leisure exploring the vibrant city which is the second highest capital city in the world, nestled at the foot of the Volcano Pichincha. Uncover the remarkable history of Quito which prompted UNESCO to declare it the first of its World Heritage sites in 1978! After being settled by the Quitu tribe in the first millennium, Quito was eventually integrated into the Inca Empire before being destroyed and re-established in 1534 by Spanish conquistador, Sebastian de Benalcázar. In the evening, enjoy a special welcome dinner at a local restaurant to kick off the visit to Ecuador.

Here, board a small ferry that crosses the azure waters of the channel to Santa Cruz, a journey that takes about five minutes. On the other side, we travel through a rural agricultural area surrounded by wild landscapes and many different species of flora and fauna. Be on the lookout for Finches which are famous for being the basis of Darwin's theory of evolution. Admire the famous Galapagos land tortoises in their natural environment before joining a spectacular half hour hike through one of the fascinating Lava Tunnels formed by lava from the volcanoes.
