Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands

Day 1 - Puntarenas (Costa Rica)

Our adventure begins in the bustling port of Puntarenas in Costa Rica. Perhaps spend some time exploring the charming architecture and oceanfront boardwalk before boarding Roald Amundsen.

Day 2 - Quepos

Arrive in Quepos, the busy gateway to Manuel Antonio National Park; one of the Costa Rica's much-loved attractions which is renowned for its abundance of wildlife. Witness three-toed sloths, white-faced Capuchin monkeys and a variety of tropical birds as you stroll through this fascinating rainforest. As well as the country's nest zip-lining adventures, a walk through this rainforest will lead to lagoons, white sand beaches and impressive coral reefs. Perhaps join a boat tour through the mangroves to learn about the phenomenal wildlife and fragile ecosystem.

Day 3 - Golfito

Beautiful Golfito is located on a small gulf surrounded by densely forested hills. Relax on the breathtaking beaches, swim and surf in the stunning waters or admire the magnificent views that Golfito has to offer. Perhaps take the opportunity to join a naturalist guide for a spectacular marine wildlife observation tour. Alternatively, take a drive along the charming coast to the National Wildlife Refuge of Golfito for a guided nature walk.

Day 4 - Isla de la Coiba (Panama)

Today you will visit Coiba National Park; one of Panama's great natural treasures and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its rich biodiversity and spectacular coral reefs. Coiba, the country's largest island has an intriguing history as it was the site of a notorious penal colony that closed down in 2004. Perhaps stroll along the serene white sand beaches or spend some time snorkelling amongst the remarkable marine life.

Day 5 - At Sea

Spend the day at sea as you cross the Equator. Perhaps join the Explorer team for interesting presentations and talks.

Day 6 - Manta (Ecuador)

The lively port town of Manta has stunning beaches and is often the starting point for day trips. Perhaps travel to Montecristi where the Panama hats are made. These traditional hats can take months to make and certain designs are believed to be able to hold water. Alternatively, you have the option to take a scenic drive to a private venue and enjoy a delicious tea and sweets that are unique to Ecuador before watching a performance by a local dance group.

Day 7 - At Sea

Join in the various workshops and presentations as you spend another relaxing day at sea.

Day 8 - Trujillo (Peru)

The city of Trujillo which is a UNESCO World Heritage site sits on the edge of the Andean foothills and has plenty to offer, including spectacular colonial architecture. The beautiful Plaza de Armas is overlooked by the ornate cathedral and city hall. There are also numerous colonial mansions which feature a distinct wrought-iron grillwork that have been remarkably well-preserved. Discover the area's pre-Incan archaeological sites on an optional excursion, including UNESCO-listed Chan Chan, translated as "sun-sun", and the spectacular Temples of the Sun and Moon.

Day 9 - At Sea

Spend the day at sea.

Day 10 - Callao (Peru) - Quito (Ecuador)

This morning, disembark at Callao in Peru and transfer to Lima airport for your flight to Quito for a 2-night hotel stay. Once in Quito, spend the day at leisure exploring the vibrant city which is the second highest capital city in the world, nestled at the foot of the Volcano Pichincha. Uncover the remarkable history of Quito which prompted UNESCO to declare it the first of its World Heritage sites in 1978! After being settled by the Quitu tribe in the first millennium, Quito was eventually integrated into the Inca Empire before being destroyed and re-established in 1534 by Spanish conquistador, Sebastian de Benalcázar.

Day 11 - Quito

This morning, drive North to the Equator and enjoy a visit to the Inti Ñan Museum before ascending the Teleférico for spectacular views of the city. Return to the city centre for a delicious lunch in the lovely charming quarter and spend the afternoon exploring Quito's historical landmarks.

Day 12 - Quito - Baltra Island - Santa Cruz Island

This morning, fly from Quito Airport to Baltra Island. Upon arrival at Baltra´s airport, meet the local representative and board a bus for the short transfer to Itabaca Channel, which separates Baltra Island from Santa Cruz Island. Here, board a small ferry that crosses the azure waters of the channel to Santa Cruz, a journey that takes about five minutes. On the other side, we travel through a rural agricultural area surrounded by wild landscapes and many different species of flora and fauna. Be on the lookout for Finches which are famous for being the basis of Darwin's theory of evolution. Admire the famous Galapagos land tortoises in their natural environment before joining a spectacular half hour hike through one of the fascinating Lava Tunnels formed by lava from the volcanoes. After settling into your Puerto Ayora hotel for a 3-night stay, walk to the nearby Charles Darwin Research Station to learn about the history and development of the Galapagos Islands and observe the giant land tortoises. Spend the afternoon at leisure.

Day 13 -14 - Galapagos Islands

After breakfast at the hotel, spend two full days touring the nearby uninhabited islands by boat. Please note only one island will be visited per day, these may include Bartolomé Island, famous for Pinnacle Rock and Galápagos penguins; or South Plaza Island, home to a colony of land iguanas; or Santa Fe Island, known for having the islands´ most sea beautiful coves; or North Seymour Island, considered a microcosm of the entire archipelago. The visits are regulated by the Galápagos National Park and we are notified of permission 30 days prior to the visit.

Day 15 - Baltra Island - Guayaquil

After breakfast, transfer to Baltra Airport, stopping en route at “The Twins” or “Los Gemelos” - two impressive volcanic depressions in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island. Fly from Baltra Island to Guayaquil where you will start your journey home.
