The Legacy of World War II Special Offer

Learn about the history and culture of the Western Pacific, from 5,000 years of Chinese history to the legacy of the World War II in Japan. Follow in the footsteps of General Douglas MacArthur, meet with survivors at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and enjoy on-board discussions with historians James Bradley and Philip Hurst to explore how the war has shaped the world today.

Enjoy an overnight hotel stay in Hong Kong then the following day join the excursion exploring the city's highlights before embarking Le Laperouse. Sail to Taiwan where the harbour city of Keelung lies on the island's beautiful coastline then continue on to the Yaeyama archipelago to relax on Ishigaki's idyllic white sandy beaches or snorkel in the emerald waters. Perhaps learn about Okinawa's history and heritage at Shuri Castle or sample local delicacies at Naha's picturesque Makishi Public Market.

The coastal city of Kagoshima is dominated by its still-active volcano, Sakurajima, and Uwajima Castle has a beautiful ornamental garden and bridge. In Hiroshima visit the Peace Park and Memorial Museum to meet a survivor of the blast who will tell the story of August 6, 1945. Perhaps uncover more about Japan's culture with visits to the Tokushima Modern Art Museum and the Tokushima Prefectural Museum. In Shimizu there are breathtaking views of Mount Fuji and Shingu is the gateway to the beautiful Dorokyo Gorge which has been carved by the emerald Kumano river.

The Legacy of World War II Itinerary

Day 1 - Hong Kong (China)

Transfer from the airport to the Kowloon Shangri La Hotel (or similar). Explore Hong Kong at leisure before a Welcome Cocktail Reception with the Tour Manager and guest lecturers James Bradley and Philip Hurst.

Day 2 - Hong Kong

Join the city excursion that features a tram ride to Victoria Peak and a visit to Aberdeen floating village followed by lunch and a tour of the WWII exhibits in the Museum of Coastal Defence. Embark Le Laperouse late this afternoon.

Day 3 - At sea

Enjoy the ship's facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 4 - Keelung (Taiwan)

Keelung lies on the beautiful Taiwan coast and is famous for its Miaokou night market where there are typical Taiwanese culinary delicacies to enjoy. Nearby is the stunning Yehliu natural park with its amazing rock formations.

Day 5 - Ishigaki (Japan)

Ishigaki is a tropical island with white sandy beaches, clear emerald waters and colourful coral reefs. Perhaps explore the pristine coral reefs on a scuba dive or snorkelling session where there may be the chance to spot manta rays.

Day 6 - Naha, Okinawa

Naha has a lively atmosphere and Makishi Public Market, nicknamed Naha's kitchen, offers a colourful fish, Okinawan foodstuffs, local spices and the chance to sample delicacies cooked on front of you. Shuri Castle gives an insight into the island's history and heritage.

Day 7 - At sea

Enjoy the ship's facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 8 - Kagoshima

Kagoshima is dominated by the active Sakurajima volcano and is often compared to the Italian city of Naples.

Day 9 - Uwajima

Uwajima is a delight for lovers of history and culture, with its majestic 17th-century Uwajima Castle and Taga Shrine.

Day 10 - Hiroshima

Visit the Peace Park and Memorial Museum which commemorates the dropping of world's first atomic bomb, and meet with a survivor of the blast and successor survivors who tell the story of August 6, 1945, and of what followed. This afternoon there is the option to travel by boat to Miyajima to see the elegant 16th-century Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Day 11 - Tokushima

The modern city of Tokushima is home to the Tokushima Modern Art Museum and the Tokushima Prefectural Museum.

Day 12 - At sea

Enjoy the ship's facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 13 - Shimizu

Shimizu is dominated by Mount Fuji and surrounded by towering mountains, shimmering lakes and a beautiful coastline.

Day 14 - Shingu

Shingu's Kumano Sanzan religious complex is dedicated to three sacred mountains and home to two Shinto temples as well as the famous sacred nagi tree, said to have been planted around 1159. Perhaps take a boat trip to the Dorokyo Gorge, a natural beauty spot created by the emerald waters of the Kumano river.

Day 15 - Osaka

Disembark Le Laperouse in Osaka.
