Ancient Cultures of Papua New Guinea Itinerary

Day 1 - Brisbane (Australia) - Honiara (Solomon Islands)

Fly from Brisbane to Honiara and embark Le Laperouse.

Day 2 - Roderick Bay

Roderick Bay is a hidden cove with a shipwreck lying in the shallows of the bay, where snorkellers can see how the wreck is becoming an artificial reef. Enjoy a friendly welcome from the small native village located nearby.

Day 3 - Njari Island - Gizo

Tiny Njari Island has beautiful sandy beaches and an impressive reef which is home to colourful corals, exotic fish, starfish and delicate crinoids. Gizo is situated on Ghizo Island, whose inhabitants are amongst the most skilled carvers in the world, producing intricate wood carvings that can take months to make. There are plenty of opportunities for world class snorkelling, diving and underwater photography and there is the chance to visit the traditional markets of Gizo.

Day 4 - At sea

Enjoy the ship's facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 5 - Alotau (Papua New Guinea)

Missionaries, miners and pearlers have all contributed to the history of this region, and the local people are warm and welcoming. Join the expedition team for a tour of the town markets and WWII memorials.

Day 6 - Tufi

Tufi is often described as the Scandinavia of the tropics due to its deep volcanic fiords. Travel into the ancient mangrove forests to watch a colourful traditional performance by the friendly locals, and swim or snorkel in the clear waters of Kamoa Beach.

Day 7 - Lusancay Islands

Explore the strikingly beautiful Lusancay Islands, a real deserted paradise. Snorkel in the shallows to see an array of colourful marine life or simply relax on one of the white sandy beaches.

Day 8 - Trobriand Islands

The Trobriand Islands are one of the most culturally intact places in the Pacific, with a unique social system dominated by hereditary chiefs.

Day 9 - Fergusson Island - Dobu Island

Fergusson Island is known for its hot thermal springs, bubbling mud pools and extinct volcanoes. Dobu Island is a beautiful tropical island, with welcoming and friendly villagers who are happy to share their local culture and traditions.

Day 10 - Samarai

Join the expedition team for a guided walk on Samarai and Kwato Islands, and enjoy swimming and snorkelling on nearby Deka Deka island.

Day 11 - At sea

Enjoy the ship's facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 12 - Cairns (Australia)

Disembark Le Laperouse in Cairns.
