Mayan Treasures of the Yucatan Peninsula Special Offer

Uncover the secrets of the Mayan civilisation on this unique voyage to the heart of Yucatan Peninsula, with the possibility to visit UNESCO-listed treasures and ancient cities.

Spend time at leisure in the thriving town of Seybaplaya, before cruising to Dos Bacos, an important oil port. From here, there is the opportunity to visit a cacao plantation and chocolate factory to observe the process of producing this much-loved food, which was sacred to the Maya people. Alternatively, discover Comalcalco, the only Mayan site to be built out of bricks or head to the city of Palenque, deep in the dense jungle of Chiapas, and renowned for its well-preserved temples and palaces.

Enjoy an overnight stop in Progreso which is the gateway to many wonders, including Chichen Itza, Mexico's most famous archaeological site and the perfect example of Mayan architecture. It is also possible to visit the capital of Yucatan, Merida, which offers a fascinating mix of colonial architecture and Mayan heritage. Le Champlain then heads back to Puerto Morelos, a stone's throw from the awe-inspiring Chaak Tun Caves, where there is an optional snorkelling experience, and the colourful Mesoamerican Reef System, the largest in the northern hemisphere.

Mayan Treasures of the Yucatan Peninsula Itinerary

Day 1 - Puerto Morelos (Mexico)

Embark Le Champlain in Puerto Morelos.

Day 2 - At sea

Enjoy the facilities on board Le Champlain as you spend a relaxing day at sea en route to Seybaplaya.

Day 3 - Seybaplaya

Spend time at leisure in the town of Seybaplaya in the Campeche region. It is a busy fishing and commercial port with a beautiful beach. Perhaps head to UNESCO-listed Campeche. Set sail late afternoon.

Day 4 - Dos Bacos

Dos Bacos is a thriving port in the state of Tabasco and one of the most important oil ports in Mexico. Today there is a choice of optional excursions. Enjoy a visit to a cacao plantation and chocolate factory. Chocolate was a sacred drink for the Maya and used as currency when trading. Walk past the different cocoa trees and observe the process from harvest to production. Alternatively, visit the Mayan site of Comalcalco, the only one to be built out of bricks, and see the different artefacts, or head to the ancient Mayan city of Palenque with its temples, palaces and tombs for a hike.

Days 5-6 - Progreso

Progreso is located on the Gulf of Mexico and just a short drive from Merida, the largest city on the Yucatan Peninsula. During your overnight stop, there are two optional excursions. Travel to Chichen Itza, Mexico's most famous archaeological site. Admire the ornate Mayan architecture from different periods. You'll see the pyramid shaped 'el Castillo', the temple of the warriors with its carved columns, and the Caracol observatory. The second excursion visits the Museo del Mundo Maya, a fantastic museum showcasing Maya culture. See the remarkably-preserved artefacts before heading to Merida for a walking tour, with highlights including San Idelfonso Cathedral.

Day 7 - Puerto Morelos

Le Champlain arrives back in Puerto Morelos. Perhaps take the optional excursion to the Chaak Tun Caves for an amazing snorkelling experience. These caves were sacred to the ancient Maya and offer magnificent stalactites which you'll see as you explore these underground caverns. Alternatively, snorkel in the Mesoamerican Reef System, the largest in the northern hemisphere and home to hundreds of species of fish and an array of corals.
