Great Lakes Grand Discovery Special Offer

Nearly 15,000 years ago, the last of the great glaciers retreated, leaving the Five Great Lakes - Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario. These five lakes contain more than one fifth of the planet's fresh surface water and together are the largest body of freshwater in the world. Join Victory I on this unique cruise and delve into North America's maritime history throughout the Great Lakes, and admire the natural beauty of the Niagara Falls. This itinerary also includes rare stops in quaint French-Canadian villages and Victorian-era towns.

Enjoy a hotel stay in Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario, before embarking Victory I. Sail across Lake Ontario to the Welland Canal which the ship will transit while guests travel to Niagara Falls for a thrilling boat ride past Bridal Veil Falls to the heart of Horseshoe Falls, and a tour of the Chateau des Charmes winery with wine tasting. In Cleveland a tour of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame explores this musical genre which inspired a generation and the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit showcases the finest collection of its kind. Sail Lake Huron to Manitoulin Island where a tour of the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation reveals more about these indigenous people.

At Sault Ste Marie choose to visit the Bush Plane Museum and Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site, or The Valley Camp Museum Ship. Experience the Victorian ambiance of traffic-free Mackinac Island and enjoy lunch at the world-famous Grand Hotel on the island before the hotel’s resident historian steps aboard the ship for a fascinating lecture on the history of Mackinac Island and its hotel. Sail across Lake Michigan before arriving in Chicago.

Great Lakes Grand Discovery Itinerary

Day 1 - UK - Toronto (Canada)

Fly from London to Toronto and transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay. Toronto is located on the shores on Lake Ontario and is renowned for the incredible CN Tower which dominates the skyline.

Day 2 - Toronto

Check out of the hotel and transfer to the port to embark your ship, Victory I.

Day 3 - Port Weller – Port Colborne

Cross Lake Ontario from Toronto to the Welland Canal. Opened in 1829, the Welland Canal continues to play a vital role, allowing goods to travel from Great Lakes ports such as Cleveland and Detroit to the ocean ports of Montreal and Quebec. Call at Port Weller while the ship transits the historic Welland Canal. Enjoy a scenic drive through the vineyards of the Niagara Peninsula to Niagara Falls, where an exciting Hornblower Cruise takes you past Bridal Veil Falls to the heart of Horseshoe Falls. Tour the Chateau des Charmes winery followed by wine tasting and a delicious lunch. Free time in Niagara-on-the-lake before joining the ship in Port Colborne.

Day 4 - Cleveland (USA)

Cross Lake Erie to the city of Cleveland. Industrial landmarks from its days as a lakeside manufacturing town still stand in testament to Cleveland's roots. Explore the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with an expert guide to reveal rock and roll memorabilia including Michael Jackson's famous glove. See how the evolution of the musical genre had a cultural impact. Discover the famous West Side Market which dates back to 1912 and houses over 100 vendors.

Day 5 - Detroit or Windsor (Canada)

Cruise from Lake Erie to Lake Huron call at either Detroit, Michigan, or Windsor, Ontario, depending on the itinerary schedule. Just outside of Detroit, visit the Henry Ford Museum, where local experts will show you the museum's highlights including the limousine that carried President John F Kennedy on the fateful day in Texas.

Day 6 - Lake Huron

Spend the day cruising Lake Huron, the second largest of the Great Lakes. If you count Huron's 30,000 islands, the lake actually has the longest shoreline of any of the Great Lakes.

Day 7 - Little Current

Sail into the beauty of Georgian Bay to step ashore in Little Current, gateway to Manitoulin Island. Travel to the Immaculate Conception Church which brings together the beliefs of the Ojibwe culture and Catholic church. Learn more about the Ojibwe culture at the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation where there is a tour of the museum, the chance to participate in an ancient smudging ceremony and a traditional drum and dance performance.

Day 8 - Sault Ste Marie

Located at the mouth of the St Mary's Rivier - the twin 'Soo's' of Sault Ste Marie Ontario and Michigan were originally established as one settlement by Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century. Today the locks on the American Soo side bypass the St Mary's Rapids that fall over 20 feet connecting Lake Superior to Lake Huron. Stop at the locks for a view of Lake Superior. In Sault Ste. Marie there is the option for a half-day tour visiting attractions on either side of the US or Canadian border. In Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, visit The Bush Plane Museum and Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site which exhibts the Bush planes that tell the story of how the Canadian's battled Ontario's many forest fires. In Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, visit the Valley Camp Museum Ship which houses artifacts relating to the maritime history.

Day 9 - Mackinac Island (USA)

No cars are allowed on Mackinac Island so the horse-drawn carriage ride is great way to experience the Victorian ambiance of this National Historic Landmark. Tour Fort Mackinac and learn about its importance during the War of 1812 then enjoy the Grand Hotel’s famous Grand Luncheon Buffet. Spend free time in the town before the Grand Hotel’s resident historian Bob Tagatz comes aboard for a talk on the history of the island and its hotel.

Day 10 - Lake Michigan

The only Great Lake located entirely within the United States, Lake Michigan has a surface area of more than 22,000 square miles, making it the sixth largest freshwater lake in the world. The name Michigan is believed to come from the native Ojibwe word mishigami, which translates to 'great water'. After a scenic day of cruising, we’ll gather for a festive welcome reception, followed by dinner in the ship’s main dining room.

Day 11 - Chicago

Disembark Victory I in Chicago and transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
