Christmas Markets Cruise Review
The River Danube on board Travelmarvel Vega

There’s something undeniably enchanting about European cities during the festive season. Cobblestone streets lined with twinkling lights, the scent of cinnamon and roasted chestnuts drifting through the air, and centuries-old squares transformed into winter wonderlands. Now imagine experiencing all of this without ever having to repack your suitcase — that’s the magic of a Christmas markets river cruise. I was incredibly fortunate to be invited by Travelmarvel to spend three nights sailing the magical Danube, journeying from beautiful Budapest to elegant Vienna.

Day One
After a direct flight from Manchester to Budapest, I arrived at dusk and made my way to the riverbank. There, the Travelmarvel Vega glowed on the horizon, draped in fairy lights and sparkling Christmas trees that cast a warm, festive shimmer across the water. It felt immediately welcoming — the perfect start to the adventure ahead. Stepping onboard, my first impression was a blend of contemporary style and cosy comfort, the kind of space that very quickly becomes a home away from home.
Once settled in, we gathered for the Captain’s welcome reception — a lovely opportunity to meet fellow travellers and learn more about the days ahead. Then came our twilight ‘illumination cruise’ through the heart of Budapest. Drifting past the Szechenyi Chain Bridge and the grand Parliament buildings, all beautifully lit, a magical experience. It was a definite highlight of the itinerary and naturally resulted in plenty of photos. Later, I retired to my cabin for the night for some beauty sleep. The cabin was modern, airy and light. Thoughtfully designed with ample storage — and the bed might just be the comfiest I’ve ever slept in!
Day Two
The next morning, we woke to a very rainy Budapest — but not even the weather could dampen our spirits. After a hearty breakfast, we set off on a city tour of Budapest’s highlights, and wow, what an incredible place with so much to take in. We explored the magnificent St. Stephen’s Basilica and enjoyed some free time at the Christmas market, where a steaming hot chocolate was the perfect way to warm up.
Back on board, after a wonderful lunch the afternoon was ours to enjoy at leisure. There’s plenty to do on the ship: a relaxing dip in the sundeck jacuzzi, a workout in the gym to balance out the delicious meals, or a visit to McGeary’s Bar for ‘happy hour’. That evening, we dressed up a little and made our way to the à la carte restaurant for a gala dinner — a beautiful meal perfectly paired with fantastic wine.
Day Three
After a slow morning and a gentle stretch session in the lounge and another wonderful breakfast in the restaurant, we arrived in the effortlessly elegant city of Vienna. Vienna is beautiful at any time of year, but at Christmas it becomes truly magical, with more than 20 Christmas markets — including the iconic Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz.
We joined a guided walking tour through the city, taking in its most iconic sights, from the Spanish Riding School to the grand Hofburg Palace, before exploring the impressive St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Afterwards, we enjoyed some free time to wander the Christmas market just outside — a perfect way to soak up Vienna’s festive charm.
Back on board, it was time for our evening meal. One of the things I loved about the menu was how it reflected each destination we visited — and for our stop in Austria, that meant classic schnitzel and warm, delicious strudel. The perfect flavours for a Viennese evening.
We were then truly spoiled with an exclusive opera concert held in one of the most breathtaking buildings I’ve ever stepped inside. A grand chandelier illuminated the hand-painted, opulent room, creating an atmosphere straight out of a fairy tale. We were treated to a captivating performance featuring ballet dancers, opera singers, and a full orchestra — all delivered with a delightful touch of humour. It was an unforgettable experience, one that made me feel as though we had glimpsed the very heart and soul of Vienna.
Day Four
Today was home time, but not before one last magical morning in Vienna. Travelmarvel arranged shuttle buses, giving us the freedom to explore the city at our own pace. We wandered down the famous Kärntnerstrasse, popped into the Skybar for a warm tipple with panoramic views, and then made our way to City Hall to visit Vienna’s largest Christmas market. With more than 100 stalls, a charming two-storey vintage carousel, and a magnificent Christmas tree as its backdrop, it was the perfect final taste of festive Vienna. After a lovely final lunch with my fellow travellers in the restaurant, it was time to pack our bags and begin the journey home, bringing an end to what had been a truly wonderful trip.
Reflecting on my time sailing the Danube with Travelmarvel, it’s hard not to feel a little enchanted. Every moment felt thoughtfully curated and effortlessly festive. The comfort of the ship, the incredible food, the wonderful excursions, and the truly memorable experiences — from twilight cruises to exclusive opera performances — all came together to create a trip that was both magical and seamless. A heartfelt thank you to Travelmarvel for making this wonderful trip possible. I would highly recommend this experience to our customers — a truly magical way to discover Europe at Christmas.
