MS Europa 2 sets new standard for luxury ships benchmark
The recently launched Europa 2 from Hapag-Lloyd cruises sets a new benchmark for the luxury cruise sector. It has a distinct philosophy – relaxed luxury, emphasising individual choice in a smart casual no-tie ambience – no formal nights, no Captain’s Dinner, no fixed dining – flexibility of choice for the modern professional.
The ship’s design reflects space, style and service. Suites all have large balconies and range from 28 sq metres (301 sq feet) upward with premium quality fittings and bathrooms with separate bath and shower. Public areas have a contemporary feel, modern sculptures and art are everywhere, and throughout are marble and stainless steel finishes. The German crew have impeccable English, and with 1.4 crew per passenger the service is superb.
Europa 2 reflects a very thoughtful design concept, spot-on for this demanding cruise sector. It is also noteworthy for its environmentally friendly fuel-saving hull design, and its radical treatment of waste and ballast water.
Suites on Europa 2 have a visually separate living area, the lead-in Veranda and Ocean Suites similar in size, the former having a large walk-in wardrobe, the latter having a separate toilet and bathroom including a whirlpool bath with window (and blind) overlooking the bed area to the balcony and scenery beyond. Larger suites extend this concept, ranging up to the Grand Penthouse Suite of 78 sq metres and the Owner’s Suite of 99 sq metres with separate rooms, and an indoor jacuzzi with sea view. Butler service is offered in the higher category suites. All include a free mini-bar.
Europa 2 has one of the largest spa areas afloat – over 1000 sq metres with 8 treatment rooms and a variety of spa options. The large fitness studio features high quality equipment, sports hosts, and support from PGA golf professionals. The open pool area on the upper deck has a sliding roof for use when the weather is less clement.
Gourmet cuisine is a hallmark of Europa 2. The 8 themed restaurants focus on international, Asian, Italian, French, and Sushi specialities with ample seating to meet guest choices. There is also a cookery school for guests to enhance their cooking skills.
The 6 bars have a different emphasis – with jazz, piano, and night-life to suit as well as daytime drinks and snacks.
Entertainment on Europa 2 is based around 16 exclusive shows, designed to be non-verbal and suitable for all languages. The theatre offers table service during the shows, and spans two decks towards the bow of the ship.
Europa 2 caters for families – with children under 11 travelling free if sharing a cabin with parents, and with child care every day and a well appointed kids’ club area. Adjoining suites can also be booked for family use.
