Costa Rica – a Pura Vida eco-friendly holiday destination

Friday 17th Jun 2022

It is not unusual that the first words you hear upon arrival in Costa Rica are ‘Pura Vida’. Pura Vida translated literally means ‘Pure Life’ and represents the laid-back and worry-free culture of Costa Rica. Pura Vida is used as both a greeting and a goodbye, and at any other joyful occasion!

What is Pura Vida?

The Pura Vida Pledge is a four-step plan in which tour operators that focus on eco-friendly travel are hand-selected and recognised by the country as companies that work with sustainable hotels and excursions in order to minimise damage to their eco-systems. Star Clippers are the first cruise line to be certified as ‘Pura Vida Pledge Approved’ by the Costa Rican Tourism Board, with their main source of emission-free energy being wind propulsion, reduced fuel consumption due to cruising under sail for 70% of the time, and using high quality gas and oil.

This Pledge is to protect the unique biodiversity of Costa Rica. Home to more than 500,000 species of flora and fauna, and representing 5% of the world’s biodiversity, despite accounting for just 0.03% of the earth's surface. Costa Rica is committed to using renewable energy sources such as wind and water, which reduce harmful emissions and contributes to the protection of the many miles of beautiful landscapes. Not only does this provide many great photo opportunities, but it also makes it an incredibly eco-friendly holiday destination.

Explore the national parks, volcanoes and beaches of Costa Rica on our exclusive 15-night escorted holiday, with 7-night tour and 7-night sailing cruise on board Star Clipper, departing on 28 January 2023!
