Viking Heritage Itinerary

Day 1 - Reykjavik (Iceland)

Embark Fram in Reykjavik.

Day 2 - Stykkisholmur

Enjoy a visit to Stykkisholmur, which has well-preserved houses in the town centre. Explore the several interesting museums or enjoy the view from the church over Breidarfjordur. Exciting optional activities include kayaking, hiking and horse riding.

Days 3-4 - At sea

Enjoy the ship's facilities on relaxing days at sea.

Day 5 - Prince Christian Sound (Greenland)

Cruise through the narrow channel of Prince Christian Sound where waterfalls stream down steep mountains and glaciers calve icebergs into the sea.

Day 6 - Uunartoq - Qaqortoq

The uninhabited island of Uunartoq is a contrast between its boiling hot springs and nearby icebergs. The streets of Qaqortoq are lined with brightly coloured houses, and here optional excursions include a visit to Greenland's only tannery, a guided city walk and a trip to meet with locals and share a traditional open-house coffee.

Day 7 - Igaliku - Hvalsey

Learn about how Christianity reached Greenland today at Igaliku's cathedral and bishop's palace, and Hvalsey's well-preserved church.

Day 8 - Qassiarsuk

In the tiny village of Qassiarsuk join a guided walk through the settlement. You can tour the remains of Erik the Red's manor house, a Norwegian Viking who founded the first settlement in Greenland, or try optional activities such as kayaking and hiking.

Day 9 - Ivittuut

The abandoned mining town of Ivittuut was built on top of the so-called Norse Middle settlement which was established by Vikings. There may be the chance to meet the hunters who seek shelter in the old houses by the sea.

Day 10 - Nuuk

Nuuk, the capital of Greenland was the very first town in Greenland and founded 1728. You might spot humpback whales as you approach through the fjord. Optional excursions may include city tours, hikes and a scenic flight.

Day 11 - Itilleq

Itilleq is majestically surrounded by high mountains and glaciers. Around 130 people live here, mainly engaged in hunting and fishing activities. The island has no fresh water, so its inhabitants make use of a facility that forms fresh water from sea water. The church here has an interesting history: it was built in Thule in 1930 and was moved to Itilleq in 1963.

Day 12 - Camp Freida

This location has special significance to Expedition team member Friederike Bronny, as she spent a year in a tent here as a young geology student. A few years ago, Fram was planning to land here, and the captain needed to inform the authorities. As it didn't have a name the captain said at Hurtigruten we call it Camp Frieda, and a short time later the authorities officially named it Camp Freida.

Day 13 - Ilulissat

Ilulissat is set in the stunning scenery of the Ilulissat Icefjord where giant icebergs run aground at the mouth of the fjord. Learn about the town's long history and the importance of fishing and tourism.

Day 14 - Qeqertarsuaq

Qeqertarsuaq is the only town on the old volcanic island of Disko and is beautifully located at the foot of impressive mountains. Optional excursions include kayaking and an ice-cruising boat trip, or enjoy strolling around the settlement on your own.

Day 15 - Sisimiut

Choose from a variety of optional shore excursions in the town of Sisimiut, including hiking, boat trips and enjoying some Greenlandic specialities in a local restaurant.

Day 16 - Kangerlussuaq - Copenhagen (Denmark)

Disembark Fram in Kangerlussuaq. Join a final excursion which travels through beautiful natural scenery to the vast icy wasteland of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Enjoy a barbecue meal before the flight to Copenhagen which leaves late in the evening.
