Thule and Beyond Itinerary

Day 1 - Copenhagen (Denmark) - Kangerlussuaq (Greenland)

Fly from Copenhagen and embark Fram in Kangerlussuaq this evening.

Days 2-4 - Sisimiut - Qeqertarsuaq - Uummannaq

Choose from a variety of optional shore excursions in the town of Sisimiut, including hiking, boat trips, sightseeing, shopping for local handicrafts and enjoying some Greenlandic specialities in a local restaurant. Qeqertarsuaq is the only town on the old volcanic island of Disko and is beautifully located at the foot of impressive mountains. The town of Uummannaq enjoys a picturesque setting, with highlights including the magnificent church and unusual old turf house.

Day 5 - At sea

Enjoy the ship's facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 6 - Qaanaaq

Qaanaaq (or Thule) was the first area in Greenland to be colonised by Inuits from the west. Traditional hunting for seals, whales and polar bears is the main occupation in the town and the surrounding areas. The Ultima Thule souvenir shop sells original artwork and crafts from the Qaanaaq region.

Day 7 - Siorapaluk

Less than a mile from the North Pole, Siorapaluk is the northernmost natural community in the world and is famous for its beautiful surroundings and geology. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the church, museum or the local shop.

Day 8 - At sea

Enjoy the ship's facilities on a relaxing day at sea, cruising along the ice edge.

Day 9 - Dundas

Greenlanders have lived in Dundas for the last 900 years. In 1910, the Danish explorer Knud Rasmussen founded the trade post here and in 1963, the area was officially designated as Thule, the 17th municipality of Greenland and the northernmost community in the world. Come ashore and walk around the ruins of this old trading post, or walk to the other side of the peninsula to see the remains of the old turf huts from the former settlement.

Day 10 - At sea

Enjoy the ship's facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 11 - Upernavik

For centuries, the locals have migrated in spring to Upernavik to take advantage of the rich hunting grounds there. Many of the locals still go hunting and fishing so don't be surprised to see polar bear or seal skins whilst you're walking through town. Upernavik is also home to the world’s northernmost open-air museum.

Day 12 - Eqip Sermia

Witness the true power of nature on a visit to the Eqip Sermia Glacier, which calves icebergs into the open ocean. The ship’s Polarcirkel boats allow landings ashore in this beautiful area, where a BBQ offers dining with a terrific view over the glacier.

Day 13 - Ilulissat

Ilulissat is set in the stunning scenery of the Ilulissat Icefjord where giant icebergs run aground at the mouth of the fjord. Learn about the town's long history and the importance of fishing and tourism.

Day 14 - Itilleq

Itilleq is majestically surrounded by high mountains and glaciers. Around 130 people live here, mainly engaged in hunting and fishing activities. The island has no fresh water, so its inhabitants make use of a facility that forms fresh water from sea water. The church here has an interesting history: it was built in Thule in 1930 and was moved to Itilleq in 1963.

Days 15-16 - Kangerlussuaq - Copenhagen (Denmark)

Disembark Fram in Kangerlussuaq. There is the opportunity to join a final excursion which travels through beautiful natural scenery to the vast icy wasteland of the Greenland Ice Sheet. The flight to Copenhagen leaves late in the evening and arrives very early in the morning.

For navigational reasons the Captain of the ship reserves the right to modify the cruise itinerary.
