Geysers and Glaciers Itinerary

Day 1 - Reykjavik (Iceland)

Embark Le Champlain in Reykjavik.

Day 2 - Grundarfjordur

The natural port of Grundarfjordur at the end of a beautiful fjord is our stepping off point to explore the region's extinct volcanoes. The village is known for the Snaefellsjokull volcano that seems to watch over the peninsula from a lofty 1440m and was made famous by Jules Verne in his novel 'Voyage to the Centre of the Earth'.

Day 3 - Grimsey Island

A small island 40 km north of Iceland and symbolically located directly on the Arctic Circle, Grimsey is a haven for numerous colonies of birds all along its untamed jagged cliffs. Be on the look out for the kittiwake, the Alca torda (small penguin), glaucus gull and the Arctic fulmar. However the main resident, and also a symbol of Iceland, is the clown of the sea better known as the puffin.

Day 4 - Akureyri

At the end of a magnificent fjord over 40km long, the administrative capital of north Iceland deploys its charms on the banks of the Eyjafjordur with its multi-coloured houses under the midnight sun. The town is the gateway to Lake Myvatn, shaped by volcanic eruptions, and the famous 'Waterfall of the Gods' at Godafoss.

Day 5 - Isafjordur

In this wild, unspoilt land of lost valleys and vertical cliffs, cruise the beautiful Isafjordur Fjord and visit the picturesque town of Isafjordur, a delightful fishing village whose wooden buildings are dwarfed by the imposing mountains.

Day 6 - Heimaey

Heimaey is an island buzzing with wildlife with its spectacular vertical cliffs occupied by multitudes of birds including puffins, fulmars and guillemots. Dominated by the Eldfjall, Heimaey is the only inhabited island in the Vestman archipelago. Reefs, marine caves and the ever-changing ocean is home to seals and cetaceans such as the killer whale.

Day 7 - Hafnarfjordur - Reykjavik

Hafnarfjordur is built on an ancient field of lava flow, and is situated just a few kilometres from Reykjavik, whose wooden buildings and fishing village sit side by side with a lively new cosmopolitan town. Close by are lava fields and the famous, natural steamy waters of the Blue Lagoon and hot geysers, overlooked by Mount Esja - a range of mountains that appear to change colour in different lights.

Day 8 - Reykjavik

Disembark Le Champlain in Reykjavik.

The itinerary is a subject to change, cancellation or substitution by the Captain depending on wind, weather or sea conditions.
