In the Wake of Pioneers Itinerary

Day 1 - Seattle - Nome (Alaska)

Take a charter flight from Seattle to Nome, and and embark L'Austral.

Day 2 - At sea

Relax on board during a day at sea.

Day 3 - St Matthew Island

Explore unspoiled St Matthew Island, part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, known for its excellent birding and resident fur-seal population.

Day 4 - Saint Paul Island (Pribilof Islands)

Located in the Bering Sea, the Pribilof archipelago is made up of four volcanic islands where nature has sculpted stunning landscapes. On the islands of Saint Paul and Saint George you'll find breathtaking volcanoes, crater lakes and an abundance of wildlife, including fur seals. It is also a haven for birds.

Day 5 - Dutch Harbor (Unalaska)

Call at the port of Dutch Harbor on Unalaska Island. Dutch Harbor is the the only deep water port in the archipelago. Discover volcanic summits, verdant valleys and an array of wildlife, plus learn about indigenous cultures.

Day 6 - Unga Island (Alaska)

After a short Zodiac ride between the rocks in the company of your naturalist guides, arrive in a former village with wooden houses and a crumbling church. Originally called Ougunagok, the hamlet was home to around 100 people during the 19th century. Today it is uninhabited.

Day 7 - Geographic Harbour

Dock in Geographic Harbour at the head of Amalik Bay in Katmai National Park. The park is an active volcanic landscape, home to 9000 years of human history. It is also an important habitat for salmon and thousands of brown bears.

Day 8 - At sea

Relax on board during a day at sea.

Day 9 - Tsaa Fjord (Icy Bay)

Icy Bay is a place where silence remains supreme. Enjoy stunning views over the Saint Elias Mountains and see the icebergs floating in the bay. Visit Tsaa fjord, very close to the Guyot glacier.

Day 10 - Sitka

Sitka’s Russian history is interesting and well preserved - at the heart of Sitka’s downtown is St Michael’s Cathedral, the city’s beloved Russian Orthodox church. Sitka National Historical Park is filled with spectacular totem poles and Russian artifacts.

Day 11 - Kake

Visit the small Tlingit village of Kake on Kupreanof Island, home to over 500 people. During your time here, the local school children along with other residents will put on a show with traditional songs and dance. You may be lucky enough to see bald eagles and black bears. The village is also home to a totem pole at over 60 metres tall, considered the highest in the world.

Day 12 - Prince Rupert

Prince Rupert offers stunning natural beauty, from its pretty harbour to the nearby rainforest. Perhaps visit the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary to observe one of the densest populations of grizzlies in North America.

Day 13 - At sea

Relax on board during a day at sea.

Day 14 - Alert Bay

Alert Bay is a unique aboriginal cultural destination and is steeped in history, natural beauty, and living tradition. It is a treasure trove of Kwakwaka'wakw art, culture and history.

Day 15 - Vancouver (Canada)

Disembark L'Austral in Vancouver.

For navigational reasons the Captain of the ship reserves the right to modify the cruise itinerary.
