Mount Athos, also known as the 'Holy Mountain', is a Monastic State which from the sea is a spectacular and memorable sight. Twenty monasteries cling to the steep rocks and there are twelve communities of Christian hermits living on the female-free peninsula. The small fishing village of Sarti on the Sithonia Peninsula belonged to the Monastery of Xiropotamos on Mount Athos in Byzantine times. Refugees from Asia Minor came here in the 1920s to the monastic settlement, and their picturesque houses can still be seen. Between the long beach and green hills there are plenty of taverns and restaurants to choose from.
