Enjoy an authentic glimpse into the real India as you journey along the Lower Ganges on board Rajmahal.

This fascinating holiday begins in Patna where you can explore the 18th-century Gola Ghar granary, before cruising past the old East India Company opium warehouses.

Enjoy a visit to the excavated Buddhist monastery at Nalanda, see Monghyr's Mughal fort and keep an eye out for Gangetic dolphins as you head to Bhagalpur, home to the magnificent 18th-century mansion built by Augustus Cleveland. Continue to the town of Rajmahal, a hidden gem which boasts impressive palaces and forts.

Walk through rice fields to miniature terracotta temples in Baranagar, explore the Nawab's Hazarduari Palace on the Murshidabad waterfront with its collection of art and china and visit the brassworking village of Matiari, before heading to the town of Kalna where you can see some of Bengal's most attractive temples on a cycle rickshaw tour. This holiday comes to an end in the bustling city of Kolkata.

Authentic India Itinerary

Day 1 - UK - Patna (India)

Fly from London Heathrow to Patna.

Day 2 - Patna

Be met on arrival and transfer to your river ship, the RV Rajmahal. Later, enjoy a Welcome Dinner on board as you get to know your fellow passengers and your Cruise Director. (D)

Day 3 - Patna - Barh

Enjoy a tour of Patna including a visit to the extraordinary 18th-century Gola Ghar granary, the great Sikh temple and the State Museum. Back on board, the Rajmahal passes near the old East India Company opium warehouses. Moor overnight at Bahr. (B,L,D)

Day 4 - Nalanda - Mokameh

Join an excursion to the excavated great Buddhist monastery at Nalanda before heading to the beautiful Pawapuri jain temple. Return to your ship this evening at the great bridge at Mokameh, where naturalist Jim Corbett spent his working life overseeing the ferry crossing. (B,L,D)

Day 5 - Monghyr - Sultanganj

Arrive in Monghyr and see its Mughal fort, as well as an East India Company Cemetery. You will also visit the Pirpahar Hill, crowned by a fine old mansion as well as the Sitakund hot springs. Continue cruising to anchor near Jahangira Island at Sultanganj, a place of pilgrimage. (B,L,D)

Day 6 - Bhagalpur - Bateshwar

Cruise to Bhagalpur to visit the 18th-century mansion built by Augustus Cleveland, as well as a silk-weaving village. Visit Bateshwar and its 6th-century Hindu carvings, as well as the nearby ruins of an 8th-century Buddhist stupa and monastery at Vikramshila. (B,L,D)

Day 7 - Rajmahal - Farrakka Barrage

Cruise to Rajmahal, a town hard to find in guidebooks. Shah Jehan, builder of the Taj Mahal, spent much of his youth here. Explore remains of palaces, forts and mosques before we continue to Farakka Barrage. (B,L,D)

Day 8 - Jangipur or Gaur

Disembark in Jangipur today, where you have the afternoon free to explore. Alternatively, enjoy a full-day excursion by road to Gaur. Here, there are numerous historic ruins of mosques and palaces to visit before rejoining the ship in the evening near Jangipur. (B,L,D)

Day 9 - Baranagar

Stop in Baranagar and walk through the fields to three miniature terracotta temples. Then continue past Azimganj to Murshidabad. Here, walk to the Khushbagh, a peaceful Mughal-style garden. You’ll also visit Katra Mosque and drive out to two 18th-century buildings, Nashipara Palace and Katgola Palace. (B,L,D)

Day 10 - Murshidabad - Katwa

Like a Local – on the Murshidabad waterfront, explore the Nawab’s Hazarduari Palace and its collection of art, china and weapons. Then cruise to the battlefield of Plassey where Robert Clive’s defeat of Siraj-ud-Daulah changed the course of Indian history. Moor tonight in Katwa. (B,L,D)

Day 11 - Matiari - Mayapur

Like a Local – visit the brass-working village of Matiari. Here, learn about the process of brass beating and the heritage of this skill in such a rural area. Later, you’ll reach Mayapur, a place of sacred significance to followers of the Hindu faith, as the birthplace of an important Hindu saint who promoted the worship of Krishna. Here you’ll see the new ISKCON temple, which is currently being built by followers of the Krishna movement, an impressive structure that dominates the skyline of this spiritual town. (B,L,D)

Day 12 - Kalna

Cruise to the town of Kalna. Named for the Hindu goddess Kali, the surrounding area is home to numerous historical monuments. Like a Local – take a fun cycle rickshaw to some of Bengal’s most attractive temples. Later, continue to the magnificent Muslim shrine of Imambara.. (B,L,D)

Day 13 - Chandernagore - Barrackpore

Pass the old Dutch settlement at Chinsura then arrive at Chandannagar. Here, you’ll visit the 18th-century French church and Dupleix’s House, now re-purposed as a museum. Continue to Barrackpore and disembark for a walk past the Semaphore Tower, Government House and Flagstaff House. (B,L,D)

Day 14 - Kolkata

Arrive in Kolkata and visit the bustling Flower Market. Afterwards, head to Nirmal Hriday, the first institution established by Mother Teresa, before visiting the Victoria Memorial. A Taste of India – enjoy a delicious lunch at the award-winning Oh! Calcutta restaurant. Special Stay – experience a stay at Kolkata’s ultimate residence, The Oberoi Grand. (B,L,D)

Day 15 - Kolkata - UK

Enjoy a private tram ride in the city then, following dinner, transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK. (B,D)

Day 16 - UK

Arrive back at London Heathrow.
