Balkan Discovery River Danube Cruise Towards the Black Sea Special Offer

Journey along the Danube River to the far reaches of the Black Sea.

Starting in the 'Paris of the East' Budapest, you will cruise through vistas of Hungarian plains. Continue cruising on the River Danube with Croatia on one side and Serbia on the other. As you make your way to the Iron Gates where the river separates the Carpathian Mountains from the Balkan Mountains, the scenery becomes truly spectacular.

Enjoy full-day excursions to Veliko Tarnovo and Arbanassi. From Oltenita transfer to the Romanian capital Bucharest for a one-night stay.

Balkan Discovery Itinerary

Day 1 - UK - Budapest (Hungary)

Fly to Budapest where you will be met and transferred to the InterContinental Hotel for two nights.

Day 2 - Budapest

Visit the highlights of Budapest, a cosmopolitan city which is divided across the River Danube, connected by the famous Chain Bridge. See the hilltop complex, Fisherman's Bastion, and Matthias Church with a local guide. There will also be time to shop for renowned Herend porcelain and paprika. (B)

Day 3 - Budapest

The morning is free for you to explore at leisure. This afternoon, board your cruise ship and meet your crew at a a welcome reception. (B, D)

Day 4 - Pecs

Enjoy leisurely cruising before arriving in Mohacs. After lunch, take an excursion to Pecs, established by the Romans in the 2nd century and an important town for Christianity in the 4th century. Many burial chambers with memorial chapels still remain. Tour the Underground Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and later enjoy an organ concert. (B, L, D)

Day 5 - Belgrade (Serbia)

Enjoy a tour of Belgrade, capital city of Serbia, with a local guide showing you the feautres of the city including the Kalemegdan Fortress and St Sava. (B, L, D)

Day 6 - Iron Gates

Dock at Donji Milanovac today and take a short drive to the impressive Lepinski Vir Exhibition Centre, which houses archaeological artifacts and has fantastic views of the Danube Gorge. This afternoon, cruise through the dramatic Iron Gates Gorge. (B, L, D)

Day 7 - Vidin (Bulgaria) - Belogradchik

In northwestern Bulgaria, Vidin is an important Danube port. 'Baba Vidin', the town's medieval fortress, protected the city during the Middle Ages and after centuries of gradual deterioration, has been faithfully restored to its former stature. As the only entirely preserved medieval fortress in the country, Baba Vidin is now a fortress museum and the town's primary landmark. In the afternoon, drive to nearby Belogradchick to view the unusual natural rock formations and the fortress that makes use of this unique wonder on the western slopes of the Balkan Mountains. Day 8 - Veliko Tarnovo - Arbanassi - Rousse

Drive from the river port of Rousse to the ancient Bulgarian capital of Veliko Tarnovo. Situated on three hills surrounding the Yantra River, the city was a natural fortress with ancient stone houses clinging to the steep slopes. The oldest part is Tsarevets Hill, home to the Royal Fortress, palaces and Patriarch's Church. The historic village of Arbanassi is best known for its Ethnographical Museum and the outstanding collection of frescoes in the Church of the Nativity. Return to your ship in Rousse. If guests don't wish to take the full day excursion to Veliko Tarnovo, there is the option to join a guided tour of Rousse instead. (B, L, D)

Day 9 - Oltenita (Romania)

Disembark and travel to Bucharest, Romania's lively capital, just a short drive from Oltenita. Its wide boulevards and Arc de Triomphe have earned it the name 'Paris of the East'. During a guided tour this afternoon see the sights including the Royal Palace Square. Overnight at the Athenee Palace Hilton. (B)

Day 10 - Bucharest - UK

Check out of your hotel. Transfer to airport for your return flight to the UK and executive car return home. (B)
