Tale of Two Ice Lands - Greenland and Iceland Arctic Cruise

A cultural and scenic odyssey of spellbinding grandeur. This 11-night voyage aboard MS Fram from Greenland to Iceland is an opportunity to fully explore some of Greenland’s most historic settlements.

This is a voyage which takes you to Disko Bay and the less-visited southern regions of Greenland. En route you will visit traditional Inuit communities and historic Viking settlements; the thriving Greenlandic captial of Nuuk; and the impressive alpine landscapes of southern Greenland, before sailing across the Denmark Strait to the volcanic island of Iceland.

Greenland's coast

Quqertarsuaq on volcanic Disko island is home to Denmark's Arctic research centre. The island is rich in flora and fauna, and its snow-tipped basalt mountains tower above the icebergs which dot the shoreline. Reaching mainland Ilulissatto, see the Sermeq Kujalleq iceberg, and look out for humpback whales.

MS Fram

Nuuk is Greenland's capital, and seamlessly combines the country's traditions with modern life; the Katuaq Cultural Centre's lovely larch wood façade was inspired by the Northern Lights.

Discover Viking history in the small settlement of Qassiarsuk, and sail Prince Christian Sound, where stark and beautiful scenery awaits you; wonder at the steep cliff walls and soaring blue-white icebergs. Crossing the Denmark Strait, MS Fram reaches Icelandic Grundarfjordur, a wealthy fishing community sitting at the foot of the lovely Kirkjufell mountain and surrounded by lava fields.

Tale of Two Ice Lands - Greenland and Iceland Arctic Cruise
Day 1
Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Fly from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq, our main gateway into Greenland. Consisting of less than 600 hardy souls, who live and work in this remote desert-like landscape, the settlement is situated close to the majestic inland ice sheet that covers more than 80% of the country.

Day 2
Qeqertarsuaq, Greenland

Situated on the volcanic island of Disko, Qeqertarsuaq is home to an Arctic research station that is part of Copenhagen University study into flora and fauna. You can spend the time here strolling along the beach, enjoying the spectacle of towering icebergs that lie grounded on the shore, or you may like to join a highly recommended walking tour to Blæsedalen, a place rich in Arctic flora.

Day 3
Ilulissat, Greenland

Ilulissat means iceberg in Greenlandic and this is a town that certainly lives up to its name. Sermeq Kujalleq is the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere, feeding enormous icebergs into the ice fjord. Little wonder then that this stunning setting is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Day 4
Sisimiut, Greenland

The second largest community in Greenland, Sisimiut's bounty comes from the sea, with a modern fishing fleet, a shipyard and a fish processing factory all contributing to the town's prosperity. We recommend a visit to the local Arts and Crafts workshop close to the pier, where you can watch artisans create traditional jewellery and perhaps purchase a local souvenir.

Day 5
Nuuk, Greenland

The country's capital and its oldest town, Nuuk was founded by the Norwegian missionary Hans Egede in 1728. Today it is a place where the old traditions and the new Greenland blend perfectly, from the picturesque old buildings of Kolonihaven, to the modern architecture of the country's seat of government.

Day 6-8
Southern Greenland

Majestic scenery awaits you in Southern Greenland, an area rich in Viking history where we hope to visit Qassiarsuk. This small community is where the Viking Erik the Red settled in 982 after he was exiled from Iceland.

Day 9
Prince Christian Sound

Often filled with icebergs, this narrow 45 kilometres long sound is hemmed in by impressive granite rock cliffs on either side, offering a spectacular backdrop to your voyage today.

Day 10
Denmark Strait

Crossing the Denmark Strait you retrace the steps of the great Norse settlers of old, who left the shores of Iceland and Norway more than 900 years ago in search of new lands and new beginnings.

Day 11
Grundarfjordur, Iceland

The Snaefellsnes Peninsula has been called "Iceland in a nutshell". The diversity of its landscape, with its lava formations, glaciers and volcanoes, as well as the rich diversity of its bird life encompasses all that is best in the country. Our destination for today is Grundarfjordur, a charming fishing village that lies on its northern coast.

Day 12
Reykjavik, Iceland

The world's northernmost capital, Reykjavik is a vibrant modern city surrounded by incredible natural attractions. Cosmopolitan and stylish, the city is filled with restaurants, museums and shops. Disembark MS Fram.
