Western Mediterranean
This area covers Spain, France and some of Italy.
The busiest West Med cruise ports are Barcelona, Genoa, and Rome (Civitavecchia).
Other major ports visited include Naples (for Pompeii) and Livorno (for Florence and Pisa) in Italy, Marseilles and Nice in France, Malaga, Palma and Ibiza (Spain), Monte Carlo, Gibraltar, and ports in North Africa such as Tunis.
Central Mediterranean
This area covers the Adriatic Sea between Italy, Croatia and Greece.
Many cruises start from Venice, with calls at Croatian ports such as Dubrovnik and Split, and Corfu in Greece.
Smaller ships visit ports such as Kotor in Montenegro.
Eastern Mediterranean
This area mainly covers Greece and the Greek Islands, and Turkey.
Cruises start from Athens (Piraeus) or Istanbul (Turkey). Many visit Greek islands such as Mykonos and Santorini and call at Kusadasi (for Ephesus) in Turkey, Katakolon (for Olympia), perhaps to Egypt, Cyprus or Israel.
