Explore the unspoilt Falkland Islands and South Georgia on this superb expedition to the Antarctic Circle on board luxury expedition ship Hanseatic.

Cruise through the breathtaking Drake Passage to the South Orkney Islands and perhaps visit a research station. Sail past huge icebergs shimmering blue in the icy polar light. Enjoy close encounters with Adelie penguins and fur seals on the South Shetland Islands. Discover Deception Island with its black volcanic beaches and idyllic Paradise Bay where glaciers tower above.

Spend three days in South Georgia, home to thousands of king penguins and elephant seals and enjoy unique Zodiac landings in the company of expert biologists, geologists or glaciologists. Discover the small whalers' church and the grave of polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, before cruising to Stanley on the remote Falkland Islands. Marvel at the wide range of wildlife here, from whales and dolphins to rockhopper, king and Magellanic penguins.

The Realm of the King Penguin Itinerary

Day 1 - Buenos Aires (Argentina) - Ushuaia

Individual travel arrangements to Buenos Aires. Take a charter flight to Ushuaia and embark Hanseatic.

Days 2-3 - Drake Passage

Enjoy the ship's facilities whilst cruising through the breathtaking Drake Passage, one of the world's greatest seaways connecting the waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Days 4-9 - South Orkney Islands - South Shetland Islands - Antarctic Peninsula

Enjoy unique close encounters with Adelie penguins, fur seals and petrels on exciting Zodiac landings. Gain an insight into the everyday lives of polar researchers on a visit to the Argentinian Orcadas research station (weather and authorisation permitting) and cruise past magnificent shimmering icebergs. Perhaps visit Elephant Island, where Shackleton's men once spent a winter, or walk across vast fields of snow on Half Moon Island. Sail into the flooded caldera of an extinct volcano on Deception Island before setting foot on the Antarctic mainland at Paradise Bay. Imposing glacier cliffs tower hundreds of metres above the sea, icebergs the size of houses drift past and gentoo penguins stretch as far as the eye can see. Discover the impressive glacier cliffs of Neko Harbour and visit Port Lockroy, the former British research station.

Day 10 - At sea

Enjoy the ship's facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Days 11-13 - South Georgia

Enjoy several Zodiac landings with expert guides to experience very special wildlife sightings in this unique animal paradise. Stand in front of a gigantic colony of king penguins, marvel at the sleeping seals on Gold Harbour beach and experience the sights and sounds of Salisbury Plain which is covered in birds begging for food. Visit the whalers' church in Grytviken and the grave of polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Days 14-15 - At sea

Enjoy the ship's facilities on relaxing days at sea.

Days 16-17 - Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands are a paradise for ornithologists, with more than 60 different species of birds including rockhopper penguins, Magellanic penguins and albatrosses. Enjoy natural history walks along the coast and learn more about the fascinating flora and fauna, plus admire the Victorian houses in Stanley.

Day 18 - At sea

Enjoy the ship's facilities on a relaxing day at sea.

Day 19 - Punta Arenas (Chile) - Santiago de Chile

Disembark Hanseatic in Punta Arenas and take the charter flight to Santiago de Chile. Individual travel arrangements from Santiago de Chile.

A change in itinerary may become necessary on this expedition. The Captain will decide on the best possible alternatives depending on weather and ice conditions.
